Question Tachometer redline

I am going to put a tachometer in my truck. Those guys with the 4.6l Windsor what is the redline on your tach?

Actually there is no "red line". All of the numbers are white. Back in the day (so I'm told) the red line was there to alert the driver that the engine was reaching an unsafe speed. It was up to the driver to correct the situation.
In our new, computer controlled vehicles, the computer is programmed to shut the engine down before entering the "red line". The computer will also shut the engine down if we exceede a preset top speed.
The red line now is the rev limiter. I'm not sure about the V6 but on my 4.6 (before the Superchip) it would shut down at around 5400. The chip is supposed to bump it up to 5700. I guess the only way to tell for sure where you rev limit is would be to hit it. If you have an AT you might find it difficult to do that.
I think you would be pretty close at around 5400.

This is only what I think. Someone else might know better.
Good luck!
Tom

keep in mind, factory tachs are nowhere near as accurate as some aftermarket ones.

wittom is right on. No red line shown on the tach. Rev limiter is somewhere over 5000 rpms though I haven't ventured there to find out.

Leave it in First

Put the tach in and leave the colum shifter in first. Gradualy press your foot until the needle starts to bang up and down.
Keep a close eye after the tach reaches 5000 rpm's

so, thats why the numbers are white and there's no 'redline'. I didn't know they had an automatic shut-off if you hit redline.

OK guys thanks. I am looking at a Autometer 6000 rpm tach that I really like the looks of and wanted to be sure that 6000 rpm would be enough. Sounds like plenty and I can mark the redline at 5400.
I plan to install a Baumannator TCS to give me more control of when the trans shifts and want a tach so I can watch the rpms.

redline on my 2000 4.6

I have a 2000 f-150 with the 4.6 and 5spd trans. I run my truck out to the rev limitter all the time, and it seems to kick in at about 5300 rpms. The next mod I am getting is a chip, and hopefully that will kick it up a little more.
