Question Which engine/truck should I buy?

I am looking to buy an extended cab truck soon. I have a 97 4.6 regular cab that I tow my Mustang to the track. I need more power.

I am concerned about piston slap with the 5.4 and that long stroke. Unless Ford has this problem solved. Even so with that long stroke the engine can't last as long as the same engine size with bigger bore and shorter stroke.

I drove a Dodge 5.9 and it didn't have much acceleration although it might pull heavy loads fine. The 5.4 Ford is actually rated at more torque than the 5.9 Dodge and at a lower rpm which is good for towing.

The Chevy has the most hp/torque of all but the hp and torque come in at a higher rpm. This might be good for racing but for towing I am not sure.

Can't afford any of the diesels or bigger engines so that is out.

What is my best choice?

------------------
97 4.6 F150, 1/8 = 10.885 @ 64.10 mph, 88 5.0 Mustang 1/8 = 7.191 @ 94.76 mph

Maybe I better go drive a 5.4. They are more expensive than the 5.9 Dodge. Maybe I can find a Ford dealer than will take my 4.6 in trade without stealing it from me.

Why do you guys say 5.4 over the 5.9? My F150 has been a good truck and I like it with the exception of this 4.6 being a little on the weak side.

Depending on just how much towing you plan to do the new 4.6s are quite a bit stronger than what you've got also, especially in a 2wd.

'01blackF150,

The newer 4.6 are a little stronger but I really don't feel they are capable to doing the job of the 5.4 or 5.9 Dodge.

I found a 2001 5.9 Dodge, Automatic Quad Cab loaded with the exception of trailer towing package for $19995. I don't think I could find another vehicle this cheap.

My father has the 5.9 in his Dodge 4x4. He has the superchip and tri-flow exhaust. Mine is stock and leaves his at the light. He cannot stand that since he has spent extra money for MORE POWER!!!! Buy the 5.4. It has it's problems but hopefully they have corrected them.

I'm sure a Lightning will fill the bill quite admirably.

I don't think so, Dennis.

I'm not sure a Mustang could tow a Lightning to the track.

I'm afraid I would have to file bankruptcy if I bought a Lightning. I am sure a Lightning would get the job done though.

When I bought my truck, had a chance to buy a 2000 extended cab with power stroke, 6-speed for $27k. That is well within the price range you are talking -- new truck
