Question Am I getting Bad MPG In Florida Traffic???

I have a 2000 5.4 SuperCab 4x4 auto. I have never seen more than 280 miles out of a tank...but the most I have filled it is 24.016 gallons according to my records. My truck now has 4600 miles on it and had an oil change at 2920. I went to Mobil 1 synthetic...I usually wait for the 5000 mile mark, but I figured why not? I use it for a daily driver in pretty heavy traffic Mon - Fri though. I don't have too awfully heavy of a right foot, but occasionally I do step on it. I run 87 Octane Mobil most of the time now since I was told that 93 isn't needed and should get better MPG on 87. Please, tell me what you think. Is this normal, or should I be getting more?
I am looking at a K&N filter OEM replacement, or the FIPK. Which is a better value for the power/mileage increase?

Seems a little low. That's not even 12 MPG. Mine almost always gets 14. That's about 30~40 hiway at 75 mph and the rest around town. I don't get on it alot, but do occaisonally, like yourself. You could try as new air filter, mine was pretty nasty by 10K miles.

Thanks, I have been debating a K&N. Have to just order one I guess. Maybe once it breaks in a little more (only 4600 miles) it'll get a little better. It's killing me in gas though in the meantime..that's ok I guess...afterall, who buys these trucks for the mileage anyway?

They are just awesome trucks. But, I would like to get about 14-15 MPG.

Thanks all.

Lariat,

My truck now has about 1,200 miles on it and I get about the same mileage as you. I still have the stock little LT245x75x16's on the truck too. I'm hoping that it gets a little better as the truck breaks in and I start finding the time to do the mods to it I want. Since we are about in the same location, I will let you know what helps and what doesn't.

I don't think you're actually getting bad mileage, I just think you need a recount.

Sorry.... couldn't help myself.

same crappy mileage here, and I have the 4.6liter! MAX I've ever got is about 14.5 mpg. K&N FIPK didn't help mileage, but did help performance. Mileage also increased slightly when I went to bigger tires (285's) Don't ask me why, all I know is it happened! I've got about 9000 miles on here right, probably 80% plus short hop, around town driving, with the occasional 300 - 400 mile weekend jaunt thrown in. I think the mileage sucks too, but I agree... didn't buy it for the mileage!

Your mileage went up b/c you lowered your effective gear ratio with the taller tires.

I have noticed bad mileage also, therefore I have been calculating mileage by "topping off" at every fill-up. The first time I drove 148 miles with 30 of those hwy, the rest were city miles...10.5 mpg. The second time was mixed driving with a significant amount of stop and go...12.5 mpg. I have started to lock out the O/D if I am not going over 40 mph because the converter locks in around 35 mph this way, which eliminates gear hunting. Maybe this way it will conserve fuel around town by not "slipping" as much.

It is also 20 degrees here, which also hurts.

Thumbs down

Bad mileage here too. 12.5 Hwy/11.3 City and that's summer. 11.5 Hwy/10.5 City in winter.
Hopefully, after Ford fixes the oil leak problem. Maybe I'll get better mileage.

Hi lariat4wd,
we have the same truck (color too) except mine is a styleside. I've filled up 20 times since April when I bought my truck. My best mileage is 13.95, worst is 12.45, average is 12.96, and most miles on a tank is 307.3. I drive in traffic alot, plus I always use the A/C and often go over 70mph on the freeway. As you can see from my signature, I also have a V6 Ranger which averages 16 mpg, but I'll gladly pay for the extra gas to drive the F-150. There's no comparison.

Thanks 2000! I guess that means that when I go to 35's with 4.10 gears, I'm going to change the equation again, huh? Gotta be a rocket scientist or something...

Cool

Lariat4wd, May I suggest you try a different brand of gas. I used to use Mobile gas and read in a post from Mike Troyer that Texaco, Citgo, (forgot the third) have the highest energy content. I started useing citgo (no texaco in my area) and started getting a little better mileage. Between 1 to 2 mpg, can't tell you my mpg, I do not keep track anymore, but it would not be much help as mine is a 4X2 regcab. Good luck

I wish I was getting that kind of miles. I was getting 14-15 mostly city driving. I took it in to get it worked on(tranny) and now I get about 11-12. Since winter set in on my last tank I got 8.1. Ford did a mpg test and said the computer showed I was getting 15-16 city and 20-21 highway. I don't drive crazy. I get on it every great once in a while. My brother has an F-150 4.6 4x4 SC with the smaller all-seasons that make him run about 2500 rpm at about 65 mph in 5th gear and has gotten 20.5 mpg on the highway and gets in the upper 14 in city. He revs his out all the time and beats it all the time. I just don't get it.

Got Superchip and velocity tube for X-mas too cold to put on as of yet.
