Question 2 problems

Vehchle in Question is a 97 150, 4.6 auto.

1. Lately it's been very cold here in Iowa, and my truck makes a whine when it's started, sometimes it's really loud. I'm thinking it's from the power steering pump. Has anybody else had a problem like this?

2. There seems to be a mis. Either when slowly accelerating in OD from 30 up, or during WOT.

Anybody have any suggestions on either problem?
Thanks for any replys.

I have a 99 F150 with 5.4 It does not get cold often down here. But this week it has got to the 20's and I also hear a whine when engine is started cold. I do not hear it except on initial startup and engine is completely cold. I have not contacted dealer thought I would wait and see if it goes away with warmer temps.

Sounds like power steering pump. Fairly common in winter start-ups.

yeah i agree with the others, mostlikely the steering pump, although different my 80 f-150 used to do that, but my ranger has not yet here in Wi. As for the miss, push your plug boots down to make sure they are on securly, i do not know how, but you could test the wires somehow...i have never worked with the new motors yet, they are coil on plug right?? maybe you have a bad wire or faulty coil? just a suggestion.

The power steering pumps in our trucks use ATF fluid. I replaced that with Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. It did quite it down somewhat and would probably help in cold start situations.

Thanks for the replys.
I am replacing the spark plugs this weekend, and I'll test the wire then also. I hope that will solve the mis prob.

I had a pretty good idea that the growl was coming from the PS pump. It's really been growling during normal driving around town lately. Maybe the pump is going out??? I've only had this truck for 3 months, but it does have 111,000 miles on it.

'99 Expedition with 4.6L, exact same problems among others. I am taking it in next week for service and will post reply when diagnosed. I think it is definately the steering pump. I live in Wisconsin and temp are in the 20's, the pump is really loud.

My 97 f150 did the same thing the other day. Only it did it for about 20 seconds then went away. I think its just because the pump is cold, either that or the fluid is a little low. My ranger did that for a while and it turned out it was just low on fluid. Good 351 did Ames get alot of snow on Monday? I'm home for break and we got somewhere around 8" on Monday alone and were expecting another 1 to 3" tonight.

Powerstroke73, we got about 6". It's now starting to get a little deep out in the fields. I drive a V10 dodge at work, pulled a F150 out of a bank this morning, and then I got pulled out of a field entrance this afternoon. They're talking like 3 to 5" tonight, tomorrow should be really interesting.

Cold Expy, I'd love to hear what the diagnosis is.

Mine does that every morning when it is below freezing. It has been doin it now for weeks. If I have the same sound it sounds kind of like a rodent of some kind. MY g'dad has owned alot of fords and he says that he has not had one that didnt make that sound so I guess it is just something that makes us unique :-)
