Jacobs Ignitions, What do you know
Ok, dose any body know anything about jacobs ignitions, when installed on 150,s . H.P. Gains, throttle response, gas mileage, any info would be great.
Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul
exactly what are you planning on installing it on?? model, year, engine, etc?
I've not heard too many good things about jacobs, they seem not to like the wet.
Besides, if you are putting it on a new(er) vehicle you might not notice any difference because the computer is already setup to take maximum efficency from the engine. IOW a waste of money, and I know they are pricey.
I have a 89 jeep I put an MSD on and I do notice a subtle difference esp under load. Not much to justify the expense.
If you have a new(er) F-series and want to improve performance I would save some $ and time and get a superchip, they are very highly regarded here and a pretty easy way to get quite a boost for only $225. I'd go that route, they are sold on the store here on this site.

thanks Karl, My truck is a 1999 150 4x4 super cab, xlt, sport pkg. 4.6 triton. Im asking all the guys and gals on this site to get all the info i can because i e-mailed Jacobs, and there respons was, the ford DIS ignition system will be fantastic for my truck, they said the factory coil pack will be more than adequate. These are the gains
-8% gain in hp
10% gain in torque
14% better mileage
99% spark burn, quiker starts hot or cold, eliminates bog and heitations anderratic idle. Im looking for alot better throttle respons , something to get my truck up and going down low, well i should really say i want more power all over, any input will be great, thanks agian.

Some people swear by Jacobs igitions. But I have yet to see one of those people produce a dyno graph to back up their claims. I put a Jacobs Omni-Pack on my 96 5.8 and got "zero" addtional hp or torque on a dyno. It actually ran better with the stock coil when I put a supercharger on it. The Jacobs wouldn't fire as wide of a gap as the stock coil would under boost.

4wheeler, since you have a fairly new truck, and if it was my truck, even a new 2001 model, I would get a superchip. If you search on them here or look on the computer chip board you will see there is a high satisfaction level with them. I dont think the folks here have such a high opinion of the jacobs.
But, if you get the jacobs, and they make those specific claims, look at their warranty/return policies because if they make those claims and you see nothing in return them I'd send it back. Get it in writing.
Like I said the superchip is a great cheap way to get a good solid boost, according to what the folks here have said. I was thinking about getting one for my father-in-law's F250 PS but he trades his trucks every few years.

Thanks again Karl for the input.
I was thinking about it and decided that i will not get the jacobs kit. I will get some power pulleys and im really starting to think about getting the superchip.
Thanks again -Paul

I have to say the "superchip" seems to be about the best bang for the buck. I got a solid 12 hp at the rear wheels just with the chip alone. On my engine (5.8) that gain was mainly accomplished by the chip bumping up the timing. I could get more or less the same hp increase by manually moving the timing up, but the added bonus of the chip is also improvment of shift feel.

Ksmike, what are you driveing ? and i was just wondering how much lbs/ft torque you made at the rear wheels, and on driveing your truck or car , did you feel it pull harder down low and midrange with the superchip installed.
Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul
Right now I have a 96 Bronco, 5.8, auto. The chip helps the shifts a lot and makes the truck feel a crisper on the throttle. It does help low end torque also. At the dragstrip the chip is worth about 4 tenths on my Bronco. The only downside to it is having to run premium fuel. HP without the chip is 186 and 198 with it.

Thanks Gofish for the input, the more info i get makes things a hole lot easier to decide what to get for my truck.

Is it worth it? I wouldn't do it again. On an older vehicle, carburated, it may make a difference. the spark system sends 7-10 pulses for each spark, for the maximum burn. It also measures the difference in resistance across the spark gap from engine load, compression, RPM, and compensates accordingly.
I installed the system on a Toyota 4wd pickup, 22RE engine....got about 1 mpg gain, no other changes noted. The system has gone down for the 3rd time in 3 years, each time it broke necessitated removing the system, packaging it up and sending it back to texas, paying for the repair (90 day warranty) and paying for shipping back, then reinstalling it.
I don't think it's worth the $450.00, plus 3 hours to install if you're half good with a wrench.
