Never heard of it. I believe some of the higher quality brands are:
- Amoco/Chevron
- Exxon
- Texaco

I've noticed a difference between these brands vs other 'off' brands of gasoline. Mostly in mpgs.

dont only go for mpg's but also go for clean burn, all of this costco and pump'n'save and seasles gas is so cheap because their additives are cheaply made and dont cost jack. there is somethin in the archives about this. i would get one of the earlier mentioned..... R BESS hit the nail right on the head.

Yes, off brands are just that off brands with cheap addatives and a lower energy content.Your truck will like the name brands a lot better.

I don't want to rain (snow now) on anyone's parade, but 25 miles or so up the road, on a busy highway, we have a major pipeline terminal. Funny thing is all of the brands' tankers fill up at this same pipeline. Now maybe they put different additives in as they fill the truck-- but I do know they all fill out of the same tap!!

From what I've been told the name brand company trucks are filled and then the cheapies get the bottom of the vats and if they happened to switch grades they're dispensing 5% or more can be of a lower octane rating because it's in the pipes when they switch vats. As a result you may not be getting a true 92 octane when you buy premium at a cheapie station. Has anyone else heard this as well?"

Here in Eastern Olkahoma, it is advertised that they have "Guaranteed" gasoline. If there is ever a fuel related problem, QT will reimburse you 100% with proof of fix, and proof of purchase, of their gas. My brother worked there for over 4 years at least a dozen different locations, and he had never had a request for a repair reimbursement. And most of the time they have a lower price by 3-4 cents/gallon

Whiteflight, hate to burst your bubble, but I have yet to see a tank farm where the contents AREN'T drawn from the bottom of the tank. Same goes for inground tanks.

Markmizzou is right. In fact, in some areas, all the brands of gas comes out of one or two refineries. The additive packages might be different and I'm not sure at what point they're added. If they're added at the tanker truck, then you gotta wonder if the amount of additives are consistent from one truckload to the next.

Makes you wonder, huh?

I believe that some gas stations use the same additives. Maybe what ya'll are seeing (trucks filling up out of the same pool) is companies selling each other gas. But I doubt a cheapo brand would buy Texaco gas and then sell it at the cheapo prices.

Usually all tankage in a tank farm are filled and drawn from the bottom, it’s a gravity deal. Due to emissions requirements most tanks have a floating top.

The volumes of the piping and manifolding are known and measured. Know pump speeds, barrels per hour, and calibrated metering at the tank and manifold produce repeatable accuracy. Underflushing always protects the higher-grade product. If 100 barrels of super are being moved and than 100 barrels of regular are to follow in the same pipe, the pumps maybe shut down at say 98 barrels. The valves are then lined up to or from the regular tank and the pumps started again. Samples are always taken and lab test runs to insure the correct product specifications.

The additive packages for each brand, if different, can be blended at the refinery and stored in separate tankage if available at the tank farm. The additive detergent package for different brands can be stored in a smaller separate tank and the blending done during loading at the truck rack.

Talking

Sounds to me like GHZ knows what he is talking about. Waldo --I do know that I have seen discounter's tanker trucks lined up in the same line as the name brands, and that almost ALL of the stations in Central Mo. fill up from this pipeline outlet!

Cool

Quick Trip seems to be quality gas. Rather than being a cheap off brand they are fairly common in the midwest. I have been using it for several years and after I purchased my current truck I tried several of the name major brands with no noticed mileage or performance improvments.

Question

Does anyone know how good Sinclair or Phillips 66 gas might compare to the others.
Mike?

Ghz is absolutly right. I work at a major refinery and I'm very familar with the blending of additives. It all depends on which refinery the particular off brands get their fuel from. Most of the time you can ask the off brand station where they get their fuel from if by chance the attendant knows. Your best bet is asking the manager and he should be able to look on the bill of laden (fuel delivery document) that the tanker truck driver leaves with each load at each station it delivers to. This gives all the information as to where it originated.

Island Boy: just curious, is your employer and residence in the same city? When rumors and fables began to appear here and in the chip section, I posted. I figured those currently employed in the industry were reluctant to post due to their pre-employment agreements. I cashed out and moved on and have satisfied my non-compete clause, so I have nothing to loose no regrets or vendetta here.
