I really like the design and concept of the Volant, I wish I would have found it before I spent money on my Air Raid.
I think having the motor breathing hot air (as in an open design) does not help as much as people think it does.

Question Lots of verbage! Beware!

I think I'm leaning towards the Volant cold-air intake, it seems to be the best strategy. These complaints of the hot air under the hood, that gets taken care of with the cold air. Yes, it is true that the summer months kill lots of those performance gains, but listen to this:
Air under the hood is always significantly hotter than air outside the hood. For every 10 degrees of difference between outside air and under-the-hood air, you get an extra 1hp gain. I'm not sure, but I would guess around 140 degrees or so under the hood, maybe more (have no idea really, shot in the dark here), so even during the summer, when it's 90 degrees outside, you're getting an extra 5 hp with the Volant over the K&N, AF1, and Airaid. This is all very theoretical of course, but in a perfect world ...
URL=http://www.truckperformance.com]www.truckperformance.com[/URL] has the listings of hp/torque gains, it shows these ratings (which I'm not sure I fully believe)
Airaid: 8-10 HP/10 ft lbs Torque
Air Force 1: 18 HP/29 ft/lb Torque
Granatelli: 10-12 HP/14 ft/lbs Torque
K & N: 14-16 HP/22 lb ft Torque
Volant Cold-Air: 10-15 HP/15 lb ft Torque (only found with 5.4L for some reason)

So, I'm not really sure which one to favor. I want to email the guys at that website and see if these numbers are a result of their own dyno testing or numbers the manufacturer gave them.
By the way, anyone know how much the Volant's should cost? They don't sell them in the online store here, and they're not as prevalent as the other kits. The website pegs them at $40 more than the other kits.
Another question: Does the 4.6L V8 and the 5.4L V8 have the same air intake setup, will a kit for one work for the other?

Thanks for answering the slew of questions here.

*bump*
Sorry guys, I'm really curious about your opinions here, so I bumped the topic back to the first page. Don't mean to be rude.

I made my own. I did not dyno this mod but Ii am sure it helped the performance.
Besides the price was right.

Here are some pics.

Does anyone have any experience with the Roush cold air intake kit? Just figured I'd throw this out to you guys before I go and buy one.

FIPK

I recently installed the AirMax with the riser plate combo. It was a little pricey @ $359.95. I got it at performancecombos.com. I had very little difficulty installing the system except for one sensor on the main tube, and the PCV hose. I ended up going to Walmart and buying two 1" hose clamps to clamp the ends of the PCV hose because it's made out of stiff plastic and kept wanting to slide off of the fitting. Other than that I can honestly say I am extremely pleased with it. Now my biggest problem is keeping my foot out of the accelerator just to listen to it tach out!!

Pro Comp intake

Any one looked at the procomp air filter charger? I saw it on 4wheel parts web site. For $100 less the air force one, might be worth considering. I have yet to purchase any of them, but is a shinny tube worth $250? Not sure yet. I want the one that gives the most gains! Manufacturers Numbers say Air force one, but what do the owners say?

Ok, here is one that i think has some potential, it uses the factory box and keeps the hot air out! YOu can drop a K&N right in!

http://www.wmsracing.com/pgi-Product%20Spec?WMS-VEL97F

It uses the stock airbox so it goes into the fender well for cool air and you can use a K&N dropin

So, this kit only replaces the pipe going to the filter? You buy the kit, then you separately buy the K&N drop in filter, so the real cost is around $150. It's a toss up, and truthfully it was more what I was thinking ... The AF 1 costs $234, and this one will cost $85 less, and it uses the factory box that pulls air from the fender well, sounds good to me.
One more question I have, does the drop-in K&N filter make you remove the filter housing?
The website looks pretty flakey though. Anyone used this website before? Gah, I hate being indecisive ...

hmm

I don't know. Does the Airforce One pull air from the fender as well? It doesn't look like it protects the filter from the engine heat. What do you guys think? Where did you find the air force one for $235? In others opinions, what is the best bang for the buck. In that mind-set, is the tube even worth the price? Is the best bang from the K&N style filter, or does the smooth tube make that much difference?

Anyone tried various types?

I'm sticking with just the K&N and the stock box. This is what I had before and it worked great, plus you never have to buy another air filter. I've heard too many stories of guys losing bottom end torque just to gain a few WOT redline ponies with the FIPK's. I'll put my $ towards a superchip or exhaust instead.

I don't think the FIPK causes a loss in low-end torque. Most all of what I've read about losses come from improperly done exhaust systems. It's the backpressure that keeps the torque up.
Think of it this way, try running a race by sucking the air through a straw. Now, try running that same race without the straw. The second race you would do unquestionably better. In the best case, you would breathe air that was colder and had a higher concentration of 02 compared to normal air. This is the idea behind a cold-air intake, taking the colder air from behind the fender in the wheel well.

Interesting

What do you think is a cause for too little back pressure? Dual flowmasters on 3" or 2 1/2 do you think that is too little?

On the subject? anyone had any experience with the procomp or other types of intake systems?

I'am going with Firsttime ford.....I just finished installing a Gibson "Swept side" cat back exhaust on my truck and only plan on adding a K&N replacement filter.

I am looking for pulling power....so with the Gibson Swept Side cat back exhaust and K&N replacement filter, I think I have accomplished this for much less money than others that have gone to the full meal deal FIPK's.

The Gibson single "Swept Side" exhaust sure made a difference in the torque feel when pulling my snowmobile trailer!
