Anyone ever seen a writeup on the piston slap problem?
Well the title says it all, I am looking all over the place trying to find a writeup on the pistonslap problems that some early 5.4's seem to have.
Also I am looking for anything having to do with the passenger side head head gasket woes too.
I have had both of these problems in my F-150, in fact I just had the engine replaced at 32,000 miles. I really could have cared less about the slap issue, I have a 351C 4v that makes quite a bit of chatter when it's cold and it's going strong. It's the head thing that really peeved me. Not to mention I was using 2 quarts of oil per change. I also wonder if the piston skirt was causing some problems with the honing of the cylinder walls to create such a bad oil consumption problem. If it was from the head issue it had to be internal as I really wasn't losing much on the driveway. So to make a long story short they put a reman'd engine in it and I am a little weary that I will be seeing the same issues again at a later date but that's not really why I want the info.
I really like the 5.4 even though it has it's shortcomings (no flames please) and could see picking one up to build and put in an older car at some point but I am a little weary about the longevity with these engines and their early production problems. I have a hard time understanding how a small percentage seem to have these issues while others do not.
Anyway if anyone has torn one of these apart or knows where there is a writeup documenting the issues I sure would appreciate it. Hell my 351C was notorious for oiling issues at high RPM but with a little ingenuity they were easily overcome.
