I just changed the air filter in 99 with 4.6L. I noticed that the original filter had an orange colored base & part# FA1634. The new Motorcraft filter had a black rubber base & part# FA1632. The FA1632 seemed to fit fine in the canister. Did I install the wrong air filter?

 

I seem to remember the same issue in my Cobra. Orange was OE. Black was over the counter.
