Rough Idle
I have a 1999 F-150 w/5.4 engine and have had in for service 5 times for the same problem, that is a very bad idle when in drive with foot on brake. I first noticed this before I signed the final papers when my truck was delivered. The salesman took me into service and the service manager told me that it would go away after breakin. Well it never did and only got worse. The service techs tell me nothing is showing up in there diognostic tests. I have test driven many 5.4 trucks and mine is not typical of any one I sat in. I called Ford Motor headquarters many times and they are useless. Finally a ford customer rep called me and told me they will no longer service my truck for this problem. Reason being it is a normal characteristic and I will have to live with it. That was a real professional responce from a educated person.I do know that todays high horse power engines run a little rough because they must meet goverment standards but my truck almost feels as though it is going to stall. A can of pop in the drink holder will drive you nuts rattling. How many other people are having this problem? Has anyone had this problem corrected?

Get yourselves listed on DonW's website he created for owners of this problem. (See his 11-06 posting under "rough idle/engine miss")
Strength in numbers! If enough get listed, Ford may POSSIBLY begin to pay attention to this as a REAL problem.

Here's one for you all. My 1999 F-150 5.4 has always run great until I got it back after Dale Jarrett Ford in Monroe NC replaced the right headgasket. Now, after idleing for 30-60 seconds like in a fast food drive-through line, it starts idleing like it has a real hot cam, and nearly stalls. It idles about like a top fuel funny car until I step on the gas even slightly. Could this be a vacuum leak somehow caused by the headgasket repair job? About 250 miles after the headgasket repair, I reinstalled the Superchip with no change to the idle noted.
Mike in LA, Look close -- to the site, I am the second name on the list -- right after the originator- Thanks for the reminder anyway.

Mine started doing the same thing after I had the head gaskets replaced at Kimnach Ford in Norfolk. Had it in multiple times to no avail.

I'm taking my 2000 5.4 in for the third time (on the same repair order)and a Ford Rep is scheduled to look at it today.
Yours sounds the same as mine. At some point there is an "acceptable level" of rough idle and then there there a times (more frequent lately) when all hell breaks loose.
Unless it duplicates today in a bad manner, I'm going to end up standing behind you in the "what do I do now?" line.
The other day I test drove a '99 5.4 with 25k miles belonging to a friend at work. Smooth as glass. He drove mine ten minutes later and his words: "you definitely have a problem" are still ringing in my ears.
I got the "characteristic" explanation from the dealer as well. My question is, how come my friend's 5.4 doesn't exhibit the same characteristic? We use the same fuel & driving habits are just about similar. I just don't get it. From May 1st (delivery date) until late September, the truck ran great.
Where are you at in your warranty?
Good luck.

RJ, you may wannt to look a little further down in this (Engines) category and refer to the "rough idle/engine miss" thread started by 36Racin. We both, along with several others have this same problem. You are the first to have ford tell you they will not work on this anymore -- my dealer is still tryin along with ford to fix mine. Mine did not exibit the symptoms in the summer months.

Try this : Have the truck in drive gear on the trans., have your foot on the brake pedal, set the emergency brake firmly, slowly let off the brake pedal, making sure the truck does not move. Does the rough idle go away under these conditions? If so, the truck has a bad diaphram in the power brake booster, which causes a vacuum leak and rough idle. Let me know what you find out.

I only have 16,000 miles on my truck. What a shame to pay $25,000 for something you can not stand to drive. The only thing you can do is keep calling Ford Motor Customer Hot Line @1-313-322-3000 and keep complaining about this problem. Don't give up I have been calling twice a week, that is why a rep called me and theatened me. I told him that I will continue to call and I will take my truck in under warrenty. Spread the word for everyone w/a 5.4 to do the same, lets drive them nuts like they are driving us nuts. Did I mention that my dealer hates me, O well he didn't hate me when he took my money
