Angry vibration problem

I have a 2001 f-150 s/c 5.4L L/S 3.55 rear. At 50 mph I feel a vibration starting and at 55 mph it is at its worse. By 60 it is almost gone. Running 1500 rpm at 55. only felt on positive torque and let off the gas it goes away. If I take it out of overdrive with the p-button it goes away. I can feel the vibration even in the sterring wheel and also the whole truck. Has any one heard of this. I can never feel this at any other speed or in any other gear than o.d. Thinking possibly it is the x-mission or possibly the torque converter. I checked the "u" joints and all are tight and looked for loose or missing bolts on x-members and anything else with no finds. It goes to the dealer Mon morning but I don't have much confidence in their one and only mech. Any input would be nice...Thanks

I'll go out on a limb and say that it sounds like it's the tranny. Did you pull the tranny dipstick and check the fluid for level, color, and odor?

I also think that the vibration is exhaust related. I have the vib. on my 97 5.4L also. I also see this same kind of vib. on jet engines, you reach a point that has something to do with the size of the exhaust opening and the amount of airfow going through it, it is a harmonic vibration that is brief but annoying. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty slim chance that it could be the tranny on such a new truck.

Could very well be the exhaust. Doesn't sound like it could be U-joints since you'd normally hear a rhythmic squeaking at low speeds when the lube dries out.

Let us know what the dealer says and fixes. The info would be of help to others.

Did you say your dealer has only one mechanic???

ECM747X,
Check for any loose transmission mount bolts or engine mount bolts. Also, have the tech check all wheels for any missing wheel weights and or pull each wheel off a to check for balancing. Bugman.

Yep Dennis the dealer has only one mech. it is a small Ford dealership in a town next to mine and only sells about 400 new and used vehicles a year. They want to find another mech to help but haven't been having much luck. The Vp asked me if I wanted to work part time and he would pay for my Certs. I may do that in Saturdays possibly and a few hours in the morning. But going from 200 million dollar planes to 30,000 dollar cars will be a different environment...Told him I would let him know Monday when I brought my truck in....

ecm747x,
how noticeable is the vibration? The reason I 'm asking is because I have a vibration between 65-70 MPH. It's not very noticeable but enough to be annoying. When I took it in to the dealer, they said it was either the wheel alignment or the balancing. They said they took care of it but it's still there. I guess I'll have them look at it again at the next scheduled maintenance.

Ford doesnt know how to fix.My truck has the same condition. They changed exhaust mount at tranny, didnt help. They also changed torque converter per ford field engineer request. It still vibrates.I took off stock exh and put on magnaflow w/2.5 duals sounded great but still vibrated.Have stock exh back on.Mine vibrates at 55-80mph,feel it at 1600rpms the most. They tell my truck runs smooth, boy are they full of ****.My whole cab vibrates in neutral at 1600rpms,cant be anything but engine or trans.Started complaining at 6000miles and have 17,000 now will Ford fix I doubt it,they just dont care. You need to have service manager look into problem, from what i've read on this site and blue oval news site Fords prescribed fixes arent working.
The f150s,the expeditions, and it sounds like the supercrews, they all share the same platform and all vibrate to some extent.

New5.4,

It isn't enough to rattle anything but is annoying. At 55 it will vibrate enough to feel it in the steering wheel, seat, and also enough to see the side mirror vibrate. What is bad is it is at 55 when it's worst and I do a lot of driving at 55, so hence the problem, as the miles increase on my truck, 1550 now, it is expanding in the range I feel it. Now is 45 to about 62 but 55 still being the worst. I do not feel it in any other gear or in neutral....Yet..lol and 1500 rpm is 55 mph I have found no loose motor mounts or x-member bolts or anything that would explain it. I even checked the fly-wheel/ torque converter mounts with no loose bolts.

I have also noticed a vibration in my 2001 4.6L Supercrew. It's very subtle, but more noticable over 65 MPH and I think it may be transferred from the road. However,I Did not notice the vibration until there was about 5k miles on the truck. Now there's 9k. I'm going to have the dealer check tire balance next time.

ecm747x,
do you still have the vibration when you're carrying a load in the bed? It would be interesting to see what effect if any an 800-1000lb load in the bed would have on the vibration.

Angry

My 2001 Super Crew, factory date 10-4-00, has some noise/vibration too, 5.4L, automatic, 3.55 limited, I have 820 miles, noticed the noise in the first 100 miles, almost like when 4WD tires are not rotated (cupping), sounds like it comes from the right side of the transmission, right above the exhaust "Y", the noise/vibration is also noticeable while parked inside the garage at 1500 to 1900 RPM, it is always there, but it is more noticeable at some engine speed, my guess ?? Exhaust related frequency, unbalanced flywheel, unbalanced pulleys. Today I was brave and decide to do power take off, and found a rough noise/vibration during 2nd to 3rd gear shifts around 3500 RPMs, I am not happy with this problem, I hope the dealer can fix it. My dealer in Austin is too busy, they asked me to leave it there, they could get to it in two or three days (business is good)?
Keep me posted if if you get it fixed

Posted 11-5-00 in wrong place - SUPERCREW

Does anyone have this noise problem?
My truck is a brand new 2001 F150 Super Crew XLT, 5.4L, Automatic, 3.55 Limited, Tow Pkg, 255-70-16 tires, individual captain seats, the manufacture date is 10/4/2000.
"THE NOISE" - It sounds like non-rotated noisy 4WD tires, it comes from the tranny hump area, right side, the noise is always there, but is more audible at some engine speeds, while parked inside the garage at 1500 to 2000 RMPs, driving in 2nd gear at 25 to 30 MPH, 3rd gear at 35 to 50 MPH & 60 MPR, the truck is such a pleasure to drive, the noise is very distracting, the service manager at the Ford dealer said it was nothing serious, that it could be from one of the accesory pulleys ? (it is serious to me!.
