For what its worth, I have read that in a big truck diesel engine (Frieghtliner/Caterpillar) there has been research that suggests that a dirty filter does a better job of cleaning oil, but because of the cost/benefit, few are willing to do this.

Jupiterak: I was NOT aware that oil filters caused the piston slap problem. Is this BREAKING NEWS or just another election ALERT (BS?)?? Actually, the Fram is not viewed as a good filter due to the lack of surface area as well as the valve...

MSPARKS: VERY, VERY good point! However, most vehicles today come with a owners manual that states to change the oil every 7500 or something to that effect! That said, the manuals don't say anything about what filter to use. I think the C5 Vette's manual states to go 10K and use synthetics?

Rand,

True about the 7500 in today's cars.

For instance I just sold some guy some Amsoil for his Volvo-I had to look in the owners manual for the engine size so I checked to see what it said about oil change intervals.

This is a 1995 and the interval was 10,000 miles or 1 year. The guy didn't even know it.
