Don't you change it everytime?
Ok, For some reason I thought I knew something, but some things I read have me second guessing myself. Everytime I change my oil, my filter gets done with it. I am not the religous 3000 mile oil god so I switched to a pure synthetic(sp?) and plan on changing every 5-7k. How long should you go before changing a pure synth? Isn't the filter supposed to get changed at the same time, everytime?

For the amount of money they cost - changing your filter is a good idea - at every fresh oil change.
Why run clean oil through a dirty filter?

Always change the filter when changing the oil.
As far as when to change synthetic oil, it depends on what the oil manufacturer recommends.
For example, Mobile recommends that you change its Mobil 1 synthetic at the car manufacturer recommends, (3 to 5k).
Amsoil has 3 different synthetics, one thats good for 7500, another for 1yr/25k, and another series 2000 that can go 1yr/35k.
However, even with the extended drain oils, you still must change the filter at the manufacturer intervals. Amsoil also has a filter thats rated for 12.5K miles..
Personally I'm running Amsoil's synthetic 5w-30 oil, and changing the oil filter (motorcraft) every 3k miles. (I lose less than a quart while changing the filter).
I only put on around 15k miles a year, so I'm well within the 25k miles the oil supports. I also plan on getting the oil tested at the 6month mark just to be sure Amsoil is doing what it claims it can..

I agree with changing the filter every time you change oil. You'll find that on the Corvette (I traded my 95 Vette for my 98 NASCAR F150) forums, they'll recommend that if you wait 7,500 mile to change your oil, you need to change your filter still at 3000 miles. In addition, I always flush my engine with Gunk engine flush. Got a friend with burnt a cam wishing he had flushed his. The cam oiler on his rice burner plugged up with varnish and now he's replacing his cam. Only costs a couple bucks and takes five minutes longer to an oil change. Maybe I baby my vehicles to much, but heck they're worth it.

If you are running synthetic you don't need to do an engine flush everytime, I only recommend using an engine flush when you first switch over, After that, the natural detergency of the synthetic combined with the low volitily will leave your engine sludge free from then on.
Use good oil and change your filters often. Or better yet use good oil and good filters!!
Mobil 1 should be good for around 8-10 thousand miles. If you use cheap filter change them every 3-5, If you use a good filter like the Mobil1 or the Amsoil change that when you change the oil.

Guy's I really appreciate(sp) the feedback, thanks. I am running CASTROL's pure synthetic oil. Is that stuff any good? I have never heard of Amsoil, not sure if they have it here in SC. The castol isn't cheap cost wise, and I wouldnt think so performance wise either, but I could be wrong. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks again for all the input.

Castol isn't what it's cracked up to be.
They are a group III mineral oil with a pretty decent additive package. I know that they use Moly as a friction modifier. But as far as cost/performance. They are over priced.
This group III oil is a refine oil that they just take an extra step called hydrocracking, which make the oil ultra pure.
But it't still not as good as a full synthetic PAO/Ester oil.
Both Mobil 1 and Amsoil use the PAO/Esters, which are most costly to buy or produce and thus justify the cost of the end oil. As far as performane Full synthetics outperform even the GroupIII stuff by a wide margine.
Now if you combine the full synthetic and a very good additive package that is designed for extended drain. Use a top quality oil filter and you can save money in the long run by extending your oil change interval.
In my opinion Mobil 1 is one of the best readily available oils, that you could run around 10,000 miles no problem.
Amsoil is a little harder to find, but you can order factory direct and it will be deliver to your door. This oil is designed for 25,000 miles or 1 year service. With a filter change at 12500 miles or six months if you use the Amsoil filter.
