Question 2001 Engine, Synthertic Oil? Filter?

I have almost 7000 miles on my 2001 SuperCrew which calls for 5w20 oil. Only Mobil and Ford have 5w20 available now to the best of my knowledge and nobody offers a synthetic in 5w20.

My first question is did engine specifications change or why did Ford go to a 5w20 recommendation on the 2001 engines including my 5.4? Is it safe to put Mobil or another synthetic 5w30 in this engine or will this fail to lubricate properly due to extremely tight tolerances somewhere in this engine?

Also it seems like I saw somewhere about a check valve in the oil filter that some brands don't have and that certain brands of oil filter should be used or avoided. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Thanks to All,
Hu

You can use a synthetic I would recommend a 0w30 if you want something that is close to the specs of the 5w20.

Both Mobil1 and Amsoil make a 0w30: http://www.mobil1.com/mobil1_racing/..._30/index.html
http://amsoil.com/products/tso.html

The reason most companies don't make a 5w20 yet is because the GF-3 spec is not out yet and they don't want to formulate a something now and then have to change it which would cost more money.

I have called Amsoil Tech services on this and they recommended the 0w30. And they gave me the above explination.

Forgot to mention the filter situation.

You want to use a filter with an anti-drain back valve. Most top of the line filter have this anyhow. Mobil1 filters, Amsoil filters and Pur1 filters. http://www.mobil1.com/mobil1_racing/...ter/index.html
http://amsoil.com/products/sdf.html

Be sure to look at the filter before you buy to be sure(there should be a rubber looking ring behind the outside holes in the filter)
