I bought my 97 in aug 96 and have had no major problems at all. Replaced a torsion bar but pulgs, wires etc.. all oem and truck now has 131,000 miles and going strong... the 4.6 is almost bulletproof when taken care of.
So far, I have 150k on my 4.6, and it's seen the business end of hell...I change the oil religiously, but that's about it...It's had the coolant changed once, not really fluched or anything, just changed...I've replaced the power steering pump, a tensioner pulley, and changed the plugs (A lot) and wires (half as many times as the plugs), coil packs (once, and the ones I took out weren't bad, I was working on my truck about 4:21 and got some wires crossed, that was a doozy to figure out) and fuel filter once in this time...It runs better now than when I got it...
My truck has the 4.6 in it, and I bought it with 109K on it. It was pretty obvious when I bought it they took great care of it, and it's been running great for me. It has 115K now, and I just got back from a trip where I got 16.3 mpg in a 20-30 mph cross wind on the way there, and 17.9 (I had to check my math twice) on the way back when it was calm. I'm all stock under the hood - the only thing I've done that would help milage is add a hard tonneau.
No complaints, here!

I just bought a '99 scab with the 4.6L. It has 156,000 miles on it and runs great. The previous owner lived in Canton, TX, and commuted to Dallas/Fort Worth every day - meaning 60 to 90 miles one way - so most of the mileage is really highway. It had regular service.
I don't use it as a daily driver so the most I'll use it is 3000 or so a year. I expect it will easily last me 10+ years. Based on this, it will take a while for me to even check the gas mileage.
I regularly drive my vehicles well over 150K miles. Don't worry, that 4.6L will probably easily hit 200k.

I bought my 97 in April of 2000 with 56k on the clock. I gave it to my mom @ 117,000 with nary a major problem, save a heater core. The ORIGINAL plugs and wires were changed at 85k and a trans fluid change shortly thereafter. It does use a bit of trans fluid, but that's because it ran low for LORD Only knows how long before I noticed it. Top it off every couple of weeks of regular driving.
A guy I know has one that should be somewhere in excess of 250k by now. It had 223K last time I ask about it, and that was in aug of 04. He told me the only thing he's done to it since purchasing it new, was tires, batteries, and a starter. BTW, he pulls heavy equipment with it an awful lot.
I bought my 97 4.6 in 1998. It had 32K on it from the leaseholder before me. The manufacture date is 8/96. I now have 140k miles on it. Maintained the truck as it should be , oil change, spark plugs, etc. and have no problems what so ever. Knock on wood, but still no leaks! Great engine IMHO.

My mom's E150 has the 4.6, it has 97k and runs great and has plenty of power. Only real problem is that it uses a 1/2-3/4 quart or so of oil every 1k miles. No smoke when accelerating hard though.

123,000 on mine with no indication of being tired. I also go WOT at least once a day, not from a dead stop of course. This is the most dependable vehicle I have ever owned.

My truck is a 2000 with the 4.6 V8 and has 89800+ miles on it and so far no problems all I have done is change the oil every 3000 miles on it so far and a new battery was put in durring the winter this truck will go well over 100k miles on it before the engine needs any major work done.
On a 97 up, it should be filled with 5W30, or 5W20, depending on year. I just had to stop my friend from dumping 20W50 in his 04. I shudder to think what could happen using oil that thick.,,,,98
