Question 5.4 will not idle !!!

Please help, I don't want to have to take this back to the dealer. Out of warranty... 54,000 Miles on 98 Expedition 2WD. 5.4 will not idle after cranking it. Have to either pump the accelerator or hold it to keep it runnning. Also, smells like the engine is flooding in the process. So, it seems to be getting plenty of fuel, too much. Could this be a problem w/idle air control? If so, where is it located and has anybody ever had this problem who could offer some help? Thanks in advance

On my truck it's on top of the motor located almost right below the right windshield wiper post. It has a hose feeding out to the left. Tap it a few times with your jake handle and carry a big screwdriver to hit it with until you can get it fixed.

Cool

Thanks Raoul!

Took all but 15 mins to unbolt that sucker, spray a little WD-40 in there where the actuator moves, then blew it out with the air hose. It was a little hard to get to. I had to lay over the top of the open hood like I was doing some major surgery to that motor...LOL. Plopped that puppy back on and Connected the wire back up and that 5.4 idles like new! Aint the internet great? I'd never known where to begin without the help from this message board and all the great people who surf here!

Cool

Monster: It's the same on the older trucks. Just don't get any cleaner/lube into the solenoid/motor part. You may want to unbolt it b4 cleaning.

Red face

I hadn't thought of the air control valve. I was thinking along the lines of the throttle position sensor. Do these new trucks still have one of those?

Update: My 5.4 still cranks and idles good. The only thing I have noticed is that when I first start it up, it tends to idle initially pretty high, about 1600 RPM then it idles down ok. I suspect that I will have to replace the IAC soon. I don't know about earlier trucks, but the IAC was right on the top of the intake manifold behind the EFI intake, it's not a really big part, it almost fit in the palm of my hand. The two holes which the air flows through were big enouph to get my thomb in there. It was really caked with carbon real bad. I thought it was interesting to find all the carbon build up there.
