Exclamation EASY 30HP FOR 200 BUCKS

I was talking to a local performance mechanic last week and he had mentioned that there is a complete pulley (replacement) set available for the F150 engines. He mentioned that by reducing the spin on some devices I.E. ( alternator, Air pump, P.S. and fan) the increase is an easy 30HP. Out the back . Is this true? He mentioned the cost is about $200.00. I have never heard of this before.

It is a very common modification for cars. The Mustang pulley set runs about $100, maybe more for lightweight aluminum. I'd be skeptical of the HP estimate.

This can also be damaging on some equipment like the alternator. You might get drivability problems. Particularly with an AT. You may have a problem with battery drain in traffic!

Nice mod on my Z28. You could feel the power gains.

Honestly, you might get a 10 HP increase, but 30 HP is alittle exaggerated. You might also have problems with the charging system. I had March pulleys on my Chevy K1500. At stoplights with the headlights and A/C on the battery voltage would drop to 9.0 volts. Triggering my check engine light. So if you have a high end stereo, aftermarket lights, and you drive in city traffic; then don't do it.

I have the ASP underdrive pullies on mine but it's just a two pully set. Also these have no ill affects on charging as I have a pretty powerful stereo and no problems. No cooling problems at all. These have been dyno tested at 10 HP at the rear wheels. The HP number your mechanic gave you was a flywheel rating I'm sure there's no pully system out there that can give you those kind of gain without having charging or cooling problems. Just my .02

Cool

They aren't *that* bad. It's just a matter of not underdriving them too far. My Cobra had underdrive pullies on it from the factory. They just aren't as much as what the aftermarket offers. Different companies will probably have different size pullies. I'd call around and ask what each company reccommends. ASP, March, etc.. I think the mod motors pullies are more expensive than the 5.0 pullies.

Hi LaserNAV,

Just to give you an idea, a good 3-piece set of underdrive pulleys is worth 11-12 hp at the rear wheels on most vehicles, like these F-150's etc. You do have the 5.4 DOHC motor in your Navigator, which is a bit more akin to the Cobra motor, but you'll still see about the same gains, you aren't going to get 30 hp from underdrive pulleys.

Underdrive pulleys are well worthwhile, they do work, so you might want to give them a thought, that's up to you of course.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for clearing this up for me. I still have a problem with running my peripherals at a lower rotational speed then originally specified by the manufacture.

If you're planning on spinning your engine high enough for the underdrive pulleys to pay a benefit.

You'd see a much better improvement in HP by eliminating your power steering pump -- which is a big reason that the OEM are moving toward 48 volt systems within the next 5 years.

Trouble is -- it will then take electricity to power the electric motor for the power steering -- and guess where that electricity comes from?

Look for electric fans on F-150's next year -- and electric power steering pumps not far off.

Thumbs up

I have the three piece set from Ford Racing on my 302. No charging or cooling problems at all. Also made a small mileage increase. Go for it!

30 HP.....no. Maybe 10-12 tops at the wheels in my opinion. But mine were $100. Ten bucks per HP isn't a bad deal in the world of bolt ons!
