Post What could this be?

I know this is the engine thread, but I figured I would get a response here!

I went to turn right going about 10 MPH, a ramp type turn not a 90, and it felt like the front-end came loose.... A very weird clunk and it felt like the entire front-end suspension shifted a couple of inches and the steering wheel was tight. I had to apply a lot of pressure to get the truck to steer straight???

Its at the dealers...

Anyone have any ideas?

Question

My wife had a similar thing happen to her Chrysler Town and Country Mini Van. (I know, gasp, a mini van, why do you think I drive a big as*ed truck?!?)

Ended up being a power steering problem, had to replace the entire pump. Thank goodness it was under warranty.

I just hope your Expe is also still under warranty, this could get expensive.

Good luck.

look at the power steering pump, also check the fluid level in the resovior, if it were mechanical you should see a definite drift left or right, when on a traveling straight forward. if your power steering unit checks out fine and you are not skating or drifiting, then its time to get that puppy on a lift and look underneath...

Deeler said "we didn't find anything sir." I said well something is not right. They said to come down and drive it with the tech.... So I did...
He drove it 30 miles and used 3 gals of gas > inspected the entire front-end and still found nothing. Sounds like a good case of SCREWING OFF if you asked me! Well, I went with this guy and did everything short of FLIPPING the Expy and could not reproduce the problem.

I said that I have a 7 month old son and I'm very worried about this. When he heard I had a child, he said "lets take it back and put it on the rack again, only take 5 minutes."
I asked if I could look and he said, "sure, I'll come and get you when its up."

Five minutes later he walks up and said "I found the problem!"

Turns out the bracket that holds the front passenger side anti-sway bar in place was missing a bold and bent badly. Basically, falling apart.

You think he REALLY looked the first time?

Why didn't my extended warranty cover that?
$27.50

They replaced my rear wiper motor AGAIN! I missed the 12 month 12K by about 500 miles and they charged me another $50 deductable... Those bastards....

You would think since this is the 4th motor they would have waived that for my trouble? Thats right 4th motor. I've had it replaced 3 times and it quits at about 2-3 months.

Just another fine job from a dealership! Did they look for the problem....NO! R&R only!

They dont teach troubleshooting in shop class any more!

HI Rand,

That very same thing happened with our last Explorer, the bolt to anchor the driver's side of the anti-sway bar broke, and it handled very poorly. It would set up a rythmic cycle after going thru a turn, where even at low speeds (40-50 mph) it was so unstable that you had to almost stop the vehicle to get the body motions calmed down, or lose control of the vehicle, it was very dramatic, and it could not be driven on the Interstate at all in that condition. It sounds like yours was driving better than ours, as there was no time when it drove OK with that anti-sway bar like that for us.

It was a $27.50 repair bill for us, which was fine given that it restored the vehicle's safe handling. In our case, the vehicle had been in a bad accident ($15K damage), and that was what caused it to fail, they just didn't catch it at the body shop.
