Question anti-drain back valve?

I know oil filters have been discussed to death here, but I have another question. What purpose does the anti-drain back valve serve on a filter that is mounted vertically? I can see it's purpose if the filter is mounted horizontally on the engine. Just wondered. Any ideas thoughts?

Ford Filter OK, but 20-40 may void your warranty if you have a problem. Ford says 5-30.

Cool

You hit the nail on the head JBRIII.
The valve was developed for top mount filters and has little benefit to bottom mount or horizontal mount applications. Supposedly it keeps the filter full (it doesn't unless mounted upside down) to get oil where it is needed faster. Problem is, unless your engine has been sitting for six months, there is plenty of oil on the parts in question on start up. Just more marketing "spin" to sell high priced filters.
Being a new member, you will find that topics like filters and oil and spark plugs and many other topics are discussed to a point it could make you puke. i.e. filters that can trap a paricle one billionth of a micron vs. one that can only filter a half billionth micron. It just doesn't matter. You can put 250,000 miles on an engine using a $3 Fram filter or a $100 super duper filter. your money.
I will admit I will be using the FORD filter and 20-40W oil during the waranty period.
