Post Intermittant Problem Starting

Sometimes the engine (5.4L) does not want to start. I have to pat the accelerator to keep it running. It almost smells like it is flooding too. After about a minute of pumping the accelerator, the engine will then idle OK. This has started to happen from time to time now. Anybody have any suggestions. I was reading some of the other treads about starting problems and it looks like the problem might be with the IAC(Idle Air Control)???

Have you tracked when the "sometimes" occur? Is it morning, wet, cold, hot, or any other pattern?

Obviously, if you are still in warranty, get to the dealer and have them check and document the problem.

Nomo,

This happens *usually* when the truck is cold. It has happened in 80 degree weather and 40 degree weather. Sometimes it will start fine in the morning before heading to work and then when I go out for lunch in the middle of the day to start the truck, it acts up. I have noticed lately, that when it acts like it does not want to start/idle, I have been getting more agressive with pumping the accelerator to keep it going until it finally wants to idle on its own. The truck is no longer under warranty. Typical Ford, right?

If I understand correctly, it actually "starts" OK, but won't run afterwards? If so, then the IAC is a good place to begin diags. Be sure the fuel filter is fresh first.
