5w-20 oil info.

Here's why i have problem with this question. Let's reverse it. Did ford somehow magically change these old engines that are now recomended to use 5W-20?
1995-2000 2.5-L Contour/Mystique
1999-2001 2.5-L Cougar
1996-2001 3.0-L 4V Taurus/Sable
1999-2001 3.0-L (Vulcan) Ranger (flexible fuel and gasoline), Windstar, Taurus/Sable (flexible fuel and gasoline)
1996-1997 3.8-L Thunderbird/Cougar
1996-2001 3.8-L Mustang
1994-1997 4.6-L 2V Thunderbird/Cougar
1993-1998 4.6-L 4V Mark VIII
the list goes on and on......
The obvious answer to my own question is, no, ford couldn't have possibly gone back in time and changed engines to "require" 5W-20 that once used 5W-30.
For that, i strongly believe it was mainly a CAFE issue. I also believe that 5W-20 probably won't cause any harm. I personally don't use it just because i am a Mobil1 type of guy.

The thread makes perfect sense.
Nascar Winston Cup teams would use lighter weight oil in their engines for qualifying because of more horsepower and the engines only had to last 2 laps. Doesn't that tell you something?
I think Ford has you people brainwashed on using 5W-20...............not me brother. I want my truck not only for the warranty period but for 250,000 miles si it's 5W-30 for me.

As far as I'm concerned this post is Game..Set..Match. 5W20 is not going in my truck. The above post by Tony is 100% correct.

Hey Doc Devon,
You strike again. Just curious as to who you think said that 10w-30 was better to use than 5w-xx? Never mind, I've asked you before, but your selective memory loss keeps you from being able to answer it.

*Yawn*....Navi Man?...
...if someone insists on using 10w-30 as opposed to 5w-30, when they are both essentially the same price, it's patently clear that a choice has been made. At least to those of us who read, write, and speak English. No memory loss here, but there is the usual selective comprehension on your part.
Got any juicy new facts for us, or more invectives?
Next Question?

Hey Doc,
You're just to easy to bait. I was just yanking your chain. No hard feelings. We all do in life what we have to do and in the end nobody really ever wins anyway. Happy trucking to you and don't go blowing off any fingers on this 4th.

Warranty??? What warranty???
It seems to me that there is a lot of controversy over a pretty small issue...
I have used Mobil 1 0w30 in my Screw since new, with no problems, and I have several friends who are using 5w30 something-or-other, and I even know a few folks that actually use the 5w20....
I am not afraid of waranty issues with engine oil....I talked to my local dealer, and it seems that everything is a-ok....
HOWEVER, there are far more issues regarding performance chips, intake FIPK kits, performance CATS, body lifts, suspension lifts, headers, ignitions, and the list goes on.....
When my "service engine soon" light came on recently, the dealer replaced the bad sensor, but cautioned that all the aftermarket "STUFF" may have a real detrimental effect on future waranty issues.....
Doesn't it make sense that these items could be a far greater concern that the viscosity of motor oil???
On the other hand, using $5 or more per quart oil is NOT a problem.....

Just do as every good car/truck owners do and use fresh oil every 2500 miles and you and your engine will do just fine together. Even the grocery brand of oil will protect your engine if you do it every 2500 miles.

WHAT ALOT OF YOU ALL DON'T SEEM TO REALIZE IS THAT THE MAJOR OIL MAKERS OWN LARGE PARTS OF THE AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY, HAVE TOP EXECUTIVES SITTING ON AUTOMAKERS BOARDS AND MAKING THE DESCISIONS TO PUT CERTAIN OILS IN OUR CARS. THESE NEW OILS COST MORE THAN THE WIDELY USED ONES FROM YEARS AGO, SO THAT ULTIMATELY MEANS MORE PROFIT IN THE OIL INDUSTRY POCKETS. (TEXACO, MOBILE, EXXON, SHELL, CHEVRON , ETC) AND THE LIST GOES ON.
36racin,
Please. If you are going to make a post of that nature, please back it up with some facts.
The reason 5w-20 is more expensive right now is simply a matter of economics 101, supply and demand. Their is nowhere near the demand for the 5w-20 right now so the oil manufacuturers don't make near as much as the more common 5w-30 and 10w-30. If 5w-20 becomes as popular as the others mentioned, then the price will come down.

Navi Man, Your reference to economics 101 reminded me of the story of the college economics student who was doing a study of why barns were painted red. He asked the farmers why they painted their barns red and the overwhelming answer was because the red paint was the cheapest, he then checked with the paint companies to see why red paint was so much cheaper, and was told it was because so many farmers bought so much of it.
MOBIL 1 OW-20
This should stop the debate!!!!
Just returned from SEMA and I spoke with a Mobil Rep.
Mobil will be comming out with a 0w-20 oil The Rep told me this was designed for vehicles that require 5w-20. I have the data sheet and will scan in and post on monday
