DEAD FUEL PUMP ???????
This is in a 1987 mustang 5.0, My car died a few times each time it did the fuel pump was not on. It died and I had it towed home and then it started, it works then it doesnt??, now it is completely dead. I changed the relay, checked the inertia switch, then even put a new fuel pump in and it is still dead. It seems by on and off dying, something was getting progressively worse till it finally died. Any info is appreciated before i throw a match in the gas tank.

kmmon1,
Is the pump getting + current? Have you tested the ground? CHeck the wires at the pump. Then work your way forward.

The car has not started since before i tried any fixes, I changed the connection to the pump cap itself first, then the car ran great for a little while, i brought it hom parked it, went to move it and it was dead again. So the connection was not bad like i though it was, so i tried the pump and the relay and it is still dead. I am still not sure of where the pump is grounded. THere are 4 wires going to the tank 2 for the gauge and 2 for the pump, for the pump one should be hot and the other should be the ground. where would it be grounded for me to check the actual connection to the frame or where ever it is grounded. And i dont think i can hook a jumper from a battery to the pump because you can not put 12 volts into the tank because if there is a short it can explode the tank so i have been told???
any other suggestions

There should be three wires leading to the connector on the pump (One Hot for the pump, one hot for the guage, and one ground). Check for continuity through the pump, as well as voltage at the connector. If there is none, run a pair of wires from the battery to see if the pump will run. If the pump is running, it's not the pump.
Are you absolutely sure it'sa lack of fuel that's causing the fuel pump to not run? If so, try putting in a jumper for the fuel pump electricity and drive it until you're sure it's working. If it doesn't die, then you can be sure it's caused by the fuel pump losing power. If it does, then your problem is elsewhere.
