Post engine won't idle

Help! My '97 F150 4x2 4.6 5spd will run but won't idle. The plugs were changed over a month ago and the fuel filter tonight (thinking that may be the problem). The engine cranks and runs normal as long as the gas pedal is being pushed. But as soon as it is released the engine dies. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Power feels fine, and it has 62K

TPS (throttle position sensor) maybe. Hows the power? how many miles? maybe clogged injectors.

Good luck,
Mark

Did this come on gradual or all of a sudden. Did you make some change right before it happened. I've seen bad plugs or plug wires (bad or loose ends) cause this. Unless it's electronic based, I think the key is that it runs fine with higher RPMs yet poorly at idle. See if your dealer will let you have a peak at their service manual, they should have a diagnostic tree in there. Good Luck

I agree with gmc305, try a TPS. Unless you have friends at a ford dealership that will test it for you.

did you just recently re-oil your K&N? too much oil and it causes many problems.

Thanks for your ideas. The problem turned out to be the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve. It sits right on top of the 4.6 and couldn't have been easier to change. It was about $60 from my local dealer. I figured it out what the problem was with the help of you all and my new Hayne's repair manual.
Thanks Again!!

Thumbs up

This happened to me yesterday and I was away from home. For a temporary fix to get you on your way, just give the valve a few hard taps to unstick it.
You can use your lug wrench if nothing else is available. As for the location, on my 5.4L it's on top the motor almost directly under the right windshield wiper post. There's a two inch hose feeding out of it to the right.
