Bigger Mass Air Flow Sensor
Does anybody know if the mass air flow sensor for the 6.8 liter will work with the electronics on the 5.4 liter? I figure it has to have a larger diameter and will flow more air into my already installed K&N FIPK.
While they may be the same diameter, you will find they do NOT have the same calibration. The diameter should tell you something about the flow capacity of each.
When dealing with throttle bodies, there is no calibration to consider. Here is what I suggest: Open up the duct first (as described in "Air Box mods"), next do the MAF, (Granetelli makes one that IS calibrated), then do the throttle body.
There is a method to the madness.
To begin with (and most important), if you take it one step at a time, you can sort out problems with ease. You can also take note of the performance increase each step of the way. Always try to do one mod at a time.

Crash1,
I was thinking about installing an air box for a Lightning on my Expedition. I figure it's gotta flow better, right?
I called the Ford dealership and found out that it's $259.00 and comes with the MAF installed and the element.
I was wondering if that would be better than the FIPK's that are out there. I was also wondering if the MAF would be calibrated correctly for my truck. This would be an inexpensive mod if it worked. I found the Granetelli MAF for $300.00
Any thoughts?

It's all good!

I agree the Lightning duct will flow better, however, the only difference *I* have seen is the different I.D. of the restrictor in the fenderwell. That would be a good piece to buy. It would seal well in the fender, and this part actually supports the airbox. You would feel a K&N and this mod in the seat of your pants. The Lightning MAF will definitely NOT be calibrated for your engine.
FYI...*I* would go with the Granatelli.
While an FIPK or Airaid will increase performance, the hot air ingested does not allow this mod to live up to it's potential and the cost associated. Ultimately, these mods would seal out underhood ambient air. The difference can be as much as 80 deg over outside temp or more.
In considering my blown engine, I feel a larger duct (4")dia. Actually increases plenum volume (at WOT only).
If you guys insist, I can replace it with the stock one. I will prove it to you. The reason I haven't done this yet is Flatsman found a lack of throttle response running the Magnacharger.
I spent $40 on the parts for my duct. On the plus side, it ducts in cooler air, and does not transfer heat like a steel one would. You can experiment, and dress it as you see fit.
Here's a look at mine.
The "Whiner"... Actually, it howls... can you see a blower in there?
I finished other covers to match the tube, and I have had many compliments. You can't see it in the pics, but the finish is a teal, grey and black stone type finish.
