does anybody know the axle codes?
I have a 89 Bronco Xlt with the 302 which I just purchased for a daily driver and something to have fun with on the trails..
The axle code is (19) according to the body tag.. Please forgive my iggorants of the subject, but this is the first Ford I have ever owned.. My other car is a 99 camaro Z-28 with minor bolt ons that runs low 12's, but the thing is I enjoy driving the Bronco just as much; because it actually has a back seat..
I know the Mustangs of that year are roller cam equipped. Does that mean the truck motors are to? Again tahnks in advance for any information..

19 is the 3.55 ratio, with "open" differential (not Limited Slip).
It is a Ford 8.8 Integral Carrier axle. That is an 8.8 inch ring gear. That axle has been in use since early/mid 80's, when it replaced the 9" Ford Removable Carrier axle, and on into some of the new-style trucks.
I don't think the truck 302's were ever roller cam, thats a 'stang thing.

You're welcome!
The front setup is called a Dana 44 IFS (Independent Front Suspension). The diff is a variation of Dana's 44 solid axle unit. The Dana 44 IFS is pretty solid, withstands much abuse. The axle shafts and axle u-joints are most likely made by Spicer, another solid setup.
About the rear, Detroit Locker is a popular locker, but lockers in general can do some crazy things on pavement, so you may want to check into that more before deciding to do it. About Posi (Traction-Lok in Ford land!), the axle shafts have to pull out a bit, the carrier needs to come out and be replaced. I believe the gears could be reused, but need a new carrier that has the clutch packs and clutch pack preload spring. It is a different design carrier, to handle the clutch packs. I believe a spreader is needed, to spread the diff outer housing a bit, to allow the carrier to be pulled out. If there is a significant enough change in gear mesh, then it may get into selecting shims, new crushable pinion preload bushing, etc. You may want to look at a book that covers this kind of work on a Ford 8.8 to get an idea.
Your 89 has rear wheel ABS, so when looking at rear diff parts, you probably want to be sure that the tone wheel concept is still there, so the pickup on top of the diff has something to sense for axle rotation speed.

WOW ,I am amazed of you technical aspects of the drivetrain.. Mr Granpa what is the largest tire i can put on a stock suspension set-up? Do you suggest going to a lift? If so what and who do you recommend? Since its got 3.55's do you think I should keep those gears or possibly step up to something like a 3.73 or 4.10. Its got a 31x10.5x15 on there right now.. Could I go to a 32 or a 33? with the stock suspension.. Again thank you very much..

I need to put you in touch with people who know a lot more about Bronco lifts than I do. Out of courtesy to Web-site owners, I rarely do referals to other sites, but this is a special case. Check out "off-road.com". They have a year vs. tire size vs. lift chart, and a lot of other stuff. It's not the easiest to find on the site, it's a big site. Use their bulletin board too, can research the topic on past posts. On the home page, scroll down the left edge, and look for "Interactive BBS". That is the gateway to the board. Scroll down the forums to find "Late Bronco" (those are years '78-96). Look at Ford Truck also. Sometimes its pretty slow over there, but it is the biggest group of Bronco owners that I know of.
Have fun, and don't bust anything major far from home!
And, of course, feel free to post anything here at F150online.

I sure will check them out,and again thank you for the knowledge of my truck. Its nice to find people willing to help a stranger..
Mr Granpa the Bronco has a lot of miles on it.. (174,000) yeah i know a lot of zeros.. lol When it finally goes shoud I just rebuild the stock 302? I was thinking about running a stroked out 302..347 or should I just drop a warmed over 351 W in its place.. Again thanks..
Have a Great Day!!!
