Question Insulation on underside of hood?

What is this insulation for? I wonder if it would help dissapate heat if removed, or possible allow more airflow for FIPK's. MAybe get more under hood noise? Awesome.

The insulation is for noise. I don't think you would see much difference in underhood temperatures if it were removed. The whole bottom of the engine compartment is open to the road and the constant influx of air, plus all the air coming through the radiator. The small amount of heat transfer that would be gain by removing the hood insulation, is probably insignificant. Probably less than 1/10th of 1%.

IIRC, along with noise reduction, it protects the paint.

If you want to reduce underhood temps, put air inlets (holes) in the front of hood and guess where that air stream goes, the mount outlets (outlets) where the air stream hits sheet metal.

My old toyota 4x4 had badly oxidized paint on the hood from engine heat. Leave the insulation on there.

My 98 f150 doesn't have any though.

It's also there for engine fire purposes. As the retention plugs heat up they give way and the "blanket" drops on the fire.

I doubt it really helps much. probably slows the fire enough to help you get out of the vehicle.

I took the insulation off of my hood in my old third gen TransAm. Made a heck of a lot of difference in engine noise (which I of course back then considered good!) From that point on though, I always had a problem keeping my hood waxed for some reason. I'd wax the car and two weeks later the water wouldnt bead up like it would on the rest of the body, which I assumed atleast was a result of the hood getting hotter. No tests, analysis, or proof for the naysayers though.

I'll buy yours -- send details for price/delivery. I'd like not hearing the drone of the air intake.

Angry What!!!

There is supposed to be insulation under the hood!?!?! I bought my truck used and it doesn't have any insulation! I don't really care if it does or not, but if the heat can damage the paint on the hood like p_ferlow says it can, then I really care! Is that true? If so where can I get some (other than a dealership) for cheap?

I'm sure the ford stuff is pretty good but just buy your own. Go to thezeb.com and click on Dynamat at the left. Go all the way down and buy some hoodliner. Probably two packs'll be good, and with the leftovers, you can do the area around the muffler if you'd like!

My '99 didn't have any insulation either. Not sure when they started putting insulation in, but it wasn't in '99.

My 2000 does not - it's from the Virginia plant. Wonder if that makes a difference?

Talking

The insulation serves an important purpose.
When the insulation was applied, reports of piston-slap went way down.

Hmmm...

Well hell, if it's for sound, or causes underhood temps to rise, I want it out. If it helps keep the hood cool, I want it on.
