Thumbs up Rough Idle Corrected

I have complained about rough idle on this vehicle
since purchased in 5/31/ 2001. RE: F150 4.6L Triton,
full size bed with trailer towing package. Mfg. date
was 2/12/2001, with the small radiator. No adjustment
on the radiator as I purchased the vehicle after 5/5/2001.

Dealer ran tests and stated that vehicle matched
all FORD tests, could do nothing for me. On my 6K
service a few days ago, I asked if there was any
resolve on the idle issue. Yes there was, a re-progam
of the PCM. Idle RPM , in drive is now 650 RPM, prior
to this it was 550 RPM.

Thumbs up

Hi Art..

Tks. for taking time to post what was done to fix rough idle.

You may/maynot know....when they reprogrammed the pcm...did that change the old code to a new code number? That fix was a change to the orig. program from factory. Just curious.

Interesting....so 650 rpm fixed it...seems to me they should have caught that the first time...low idle rpm..maybe not? Good news is, its fixed.

Good luck....OT

Hello Art,

This problem has been driving me crazy on my 2001 4.6. It was manufacured about a month after yours. My idle in drive is 500-550. It feels like the truck barely runs, the whole truck vibrates, and occasionally stalls out. It is driving me nuts.

Thanks for the tip.

fixed a different route

My truck was running fine for a long time, until it started to occasionally die when I tried to start it. The problem increased to where if I started it, I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep it running. I thought that since I had added mods and increased HP, that it was idling to low. Well, I took it to ford and they read the codes off it. They said that the IAC valve was misfunctioning. So I went to O'Reilly Auto Parts and paid $43.99 for a brand new one, (instead of $75-99 from ford) and put it on in five minutes. Probably the easy "mod" I've ever done. When I started it, it was like brand new. I noticed two things: 1) It started with less time. I didn't have to sit there cranking a little like I did before it started acting up. and 2) it actually had a little more pep! To my suprise, I gave it a "test run" and it felt like it had actually made it have some more go. So that was the end to my delima. I really wish I had an OBDII scanner. That would be really cool! Anyways, I don't know if that is the problem, but it was mine. My truck runs smoother than ever and it idles at 550 real good (purring like a kitten). Well, that's my .02.

Hi All-
I don't know what code was in the PCM when I purchased the
truck new. It had a rough idle from day one 500 - 550 rpm.
It's been over two weeks now and idles at 650 rpm. The
following is typed at bottom of the work order .

"6666 PEFORMED KOEO PERFORMED KOER NO CODES FOUND
CHECK FUEL PRESSURE OK PERFORMED LEAKDOWN CHECKED TSB'S FOUND TSB 01-24-08 PERFORMED PCM REPROGRAM
1V7A-12A650-BHA"

I hope this helps someone.
