Talking Hmmm....

Perhaps the guy should have bought an America made vehicle (such as a Ford ) rather than an import?

Seriously, I have never in my life seen grown adults get so passionate about something as inaminate as oil! I think there are about five or six different threads right now discussing oil and everyone posting has their panties in a wad about it all!!! Geezzz...if convential oil is your thing, great ...good for you. If you like syntheic...your cool too. I don't think anyone will go to
h-e-l-l for using one over the other!

rant mod off.

BTW......Mobil1 sucks ... AMSOIL RULES!!!!!

I agree 15k is too long but come on!

I've used dino oil my whole life before recently switching to synthetic. I did change my usual change interval going from dino to M1 or AMSOIL......dino gets changed at 3000 miles, M1 or AMSOIL gets changed at 5000 miles.

Dirty oil is dirty oil plain and simple.

I knew I would get a response when I started this thread.
A few people "get it".
My friend is not stupid.
The owners manual is clear and there is a computer monitoring the oil and a light comes on as someone else pointed out.
The mechanic does not know the workings of a multinational co.
The service manager might. He's the one that replaces engines no questions asked and is told Mercedes will continue to do so.
(Bad for Mercedes even if Mobil 1 is kicking in).
Why... did the service manager and mechanic reccomend the 5000 mile change only after replacing the engine??? This is the huge part folks. They did the first oil change at 15000 and did not say anything?!

Change your oil at least every 5000 regardless of what you are using.
I doubt this is the end.

Of all of this speculation, would it be possible to examine the oil analysis of this particular car. I'm sure the service manager has done that at least. Right? Also probably did a tear down analysis too.

Nope I doubt it. They are parts monkeys only to get paid by the Corp to change out the engine when they croak early. Not to think about why this is happening.

I'll tell you this. There are plenty of folks on the TDI site that have been doing 10K miles(recommended by the manufacture) with no problems at all.

I think that's a pretty fair point... If you look over at pickuptruck.com and look in the Chevy message forum, there having massive problems with loosing oil. People are loosing 2 quarts on a regular basis within a couple of DAYS after an oil change without even having a leak. (Apparently there having a problem with the oil getting past the rings and burning.) I would assume all engines burn oil to some extent. I probably burn about a half quart every 5,000 miles useing Mobil 1. If you don't check your oil for two years, give me a break... I belive BMW's hold 5 quarts. If in two years it only burned two quarts (which I would consider good!) he would have been running only slightly above 50% of what he should have. If that's not asking for an engine related problem I don't know what is. Not the oil's fault though!

The computer just uses a timer, it does not do any analysis of the oil. It is basically an idiot light. It may do more than a mileage check but it does not analyze the oil. I would never trust my engine to an idiot light on the dash.

He checked his oil regularlly. That's the point, he needed to start adding more and more.

BTW, a brand new $80,000 Porsche 911 burns a quart every 1000 miles.
It's supposed to.

My new bmw motorcycle (1999)did too for about the first 7,000 miles. Now I'm down to about 2 oz/1,000.

These high performance engines need time to break in, once all of the interals are matched oil usage should go down.

Just a tidbit, my father owns a 1976 F-100 with the old inline six. He does no maintenance, I mean none. He changed the oil in that thing at 45,000, 105,000 , and 145,000 miles. Thats it!!!! I know its stupid, but the damn thing is still running. He has averaged about 50k per change. Mine would blow up after 5000 miles with my luck. Oh yeah, he runs havoline 10w40 if you were wondering.

I do not think any engine that is in proper working order is supposed to burn a quart every 1000 miles. I would not pay 80,000 dollars for a car that did. Break in period excepted of course.

Post european oil changes

I moved to the US from Europe two years ago and was surprised to hear that you here are recommended to change your oil at 3k miles. In Europe it has been recommended to change at 10,000km (about 6k miles) for as long as I can remember (long before synthetic). I have always attributed that to the lobbying of big oil here, who want to sell their products. This thread is the first time I hear that the oil might actually be better in Europe.

An interesting single case would be my friend in Germany who NEVER changes his oil on his diesel van. All he does is changing the filter every 6k miles and topping the oil off regularly. He says that by and by the entire oil is changed as he re-fills the burnt oil. His van must be close to 200k miles now.

Wink

Did anyone else think of the obvious?? It's a little known fact that Mercedes engines are failing simply because of their involvement with the Chrysler Corp....LOL!,,,,98
