The use of Filter Gasket Grease is in order if you are seeing any dust. Thats why K&N makes one. So do others.

I noticed a little dust one time when I took
the filter off to clean it. I wasn't too alarmed and used a little more oil the next time,no dust. I've never had the oil clog any sensors, maf or otherwise.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Ford offer a K&N filter with some of the Mustangs?

So far I have done 20,000 kms with my K&N and no probs...

The dust particles in my intake were very, very fine and it was an extemely thin layer. I had to hold the ducting at just the right angle to see it. And then it was hard to see. I wiped my finger across it and held it up to the light. I could definately see it then. I think michael_hovis may have a point. The sealing surface on the K&N isn't as thick or designed the same as the stock unit. When I put the stock filter back in, it took quite a bit more effort to get the two halves clamped back together than it did with the K&N. I'm not to run a filter that I have to make an extra effort to get sealed because of a design oversight. The small amount of performance gain is not worth the trouble to me. I would rather *know* that there's not a bunch of crap making it's way into my engine. The Magnacharger will take up the slack!

Cool

I have had a Stock type K&N replacement in both my 99 F150 and 96 SVT Cobra, both for more than 20k miles. Whe I replaced the stock systems with FIPKs yesterday I searched for dust/debris in the intake track and found none at all. Both of these filters had been at least a year without cleaning. The only DIRTY area on the induction was the throttle body, more so on the truck. I am guessing that with the 308 gears and the new 275 tires the increase in reversion in the intake contributed to the oily build up. I'm sure that there is alot less reversion in the cobra, as it was much cleaner. OH well both are clean now and running smoother than ever.. I will stick with the High flow K&N, and figure out some way to get some cool fresh air to it

I checked my system and there is no dust after about 5K miles. Yeah! Hope it stays that way.

"eph1fifty"
Don't know if Mustangs come with K&N, but do know Ford sells K&N as an accessory throught heir parts departments, only difference is they are blue!! I have the "drop in" on my 98 Expy, and the Generation II system on my F-150 love them. The Gen II does generate more horses, Mike Troyer has posted the numbers several times in the Computer Chips
threads.

I have read that when you do the mods with the K&N that in order to feel the difference you must reset you computer.
is this true?
and what if you just replace the filter and not the full blown FIPK, do you still have to reset your computer? and how do you go about it, just unplug your battery or what?

My filter is a JET filter and I do have a little bit of that fine dust.I think it was from one trip I made down a dirt road that was coated with the fine dust.Anyway I think all the aftermarket air filters do let a little of that dust in.

You don't HAVE to reset the computer because it will "learn" the new parameters over time, but it is recommended to reset it. Disconnect the negative cable and turn on the headlight switch for about 5 minutes (to drain any residual electricty in some components) shut off the headlight switch and reconnect the negative cable, and you are a done deal. When you start it all gauges should peg for a second or so, that is your indication the computer has been reset.
