Post A/C compressor noise

Mabey once a week or so, after my truck has been sitting over night, I get in an start it up and when my A/C compressor engages I hear a fairly loud noise for about a second and then everything is fine. The A/C works very well, so i would hate some one to tear it apart trying to figure out what this noise is... I spoke with my ford dealer and he said that there is a TSB out on some A/C comp. makeing noise after sitting a while...his explination is that because the compressor is at the lowest point on the system, that the oils drain down into the compressor and the sound is the clutch slipping a little, just trying to get the oils moving...is this a load of **** or does this sound possible.

Although this is my third post today...I love my F-150!!!

thanks,

My 98 that I had also did this and like you I took it in to the dealership. They told me it was nothing to worry about and ford was working on it and they put my name on a list.Never heard back from them and a year later I got a new truck. It doesn't seem to be a big problem just an annoyance.

Well, I agree, although my Ford has a few minor bugs, I love mine also.

I have noticed that when I turn my AC on it has a very very super slight affect on the overall smoothness of the engine. I first thought it might be my transmission fluttering but had that checked out and it wasn't that.

I'd be happy if I could find out how to lubricate the compressor or change it's oil, granted it even uses any.

Dear Mr. Monkey
You cant change the oil in the compressor without evacuating all of the refrigerant out of the system. You have to have a certification and the proper machine to do this because R12 and R134A are regulated by the EPA. You know save the O-Zone and all.
Anyway the oil is added to the refrigerent to keep all the innerds of the AC system nicely lubricated. Unfortunately you will also have a slight power drop and a noticeable engine flutter and "click" noise when the compressor clutch engages. This is normal.
Well worth the minor annoyance in order to stay cool.

Reguards,

Hobbit

Dear mr hobbit,
This is not just a "click", when the compressor kicks on. Every other vehicle that i have ever owned, has just "clicked" when the A/C kicks on. This is a loud click, sorta like the compressor SLAMMING INTO THE HOOD of my F150! Very loud! This is not "Normal", it is just another design flaw that ford has no fix for....so we get to live with it...fyi

ksdoxey,
My '99 F150 did this also, usually after it sat awhile. It would happen just as the compressor clutch would engauge. They also said it was refrigerant oil draining back to the compressor. Don't know if they had a fix for this or not, but my '2000 doesn't do it.

JJ2000XLT,
Thanks for the information. I guess missery does love company. At least I know now that there are a couple more of us out there that have addressed the A/C problem and it's not just on my ride...

This is really strange. I have a '99 and it's got the quietest a/c compressor on any vehicle I've ever had. In fact, I have to look at the clutch to make sure the compressor is running.

If you want to hear a loud compressor, try listening to an '87 like I had at one time. That truck's a/c clutch CLACKED everytime it engaged. It was so loud, you could hear it in the cab of the truck.

I can't hear anything in the cab of the '99 when the compressor cycles.

98% of the time when it engages, I can't even tell its running on mine either....its just that 2%.
Jump in my truck one morning, start it up, switch on the A/C and POW! a loud crash of the compressor engaging. For the next week or two, its smooth as glass. Who knows, as long as it cools....who cares...Thanks for all the input.

Mine lets out a SQUAWK some mornings too. I'm not worrying about it. My dad has a '92 F-150 that has made the same noise for several years. His is still working fine! Just my $0.02

i have a 99 and when it sits awhile it also makes a loud clunk when the ac is engaged (a/c compressor is on in all positions but vent or floor) , and the tsb is correct in what causes the problem, fords fix is to allow the vehicle's engine to warm up before engaging the a/c as the engine heat causes the r134a and oil to mix and migrate through the system, hence turn switch to off before starting and allow the vehicle to warm up. ( a real pain in the butt ), ford also claims that there is no need for replacement of parts and longetivity will not be effected, under this tsb.

Okay, oil in coolant. Coolant was just changed. Periodic clunk normal. Mild shudder normal. Wait for engine to warm up before starting air. Been doing that already, by coincidence.

Soapbox rant: These are the greatest trucks on Earth. They'll give you feedback if you listen. I'm sorta used to the Ford nuances, is that so wrong? Except for my 66 Bronco nuances, 3 on the tree is a trip.

My A/C is the coldest and quietest I've ever had. If it makes a noise I can't hear it because my last 6 vehicles have had Ford A/C units. Guess the valve train and compressor noises just get dismissed from scutiny because they're "normal".

Performance wise, the Modulars outshine the windsor series in both mileage and grunt. Just my opinion. My first ride in my dad's Town Car had me hooked on this motor. And now I've got one of my own. YeHaw!!

Ditto here. A/C works great (minus the smell, you all know about that from another thread) but occasionally and just occasionally, I get the loud CLUNK like the compressor is coming through the hood.

Heard it again today.

At 90-100 degrees on the average, shutting the A/C off before starting up the truck or shutting it down isn't always the first thing on your mind.

Never had this problem, but the compressor did try to come off once. I had this wierd buzzing noise when I would accelerate. Two of the four mounting bolts were loose. I also never
had another squealing belt problem since I tightened them. It was going through the belt and tensioner about every six thousand miles before I found the loose bolts. Just a suggestion if you
have a squealing belt or a buzz upon acc.
