Piston Slap Uncovered -- Measurements are...
Well I have to say that I am happy right now with what Ford is doing for me, and that is replacing my "slapper" with a new updated 2000. I am happy with that option, and I might be only 21 years of age, but I realize that in order to get something done, it takes numbers of people, as well as money. Well we have the numbers, but probably not the money that Ford can spend on a issue like this. I just learned now, that if you complain enough, a dealer will bend to your side, as they don't want to make a person upset with a product that they are selling. I do have to agree with Y2K 7700, I would want as much information possible before I would jump onto a class action lawsuit agianst a company like Ford. Just my two cents worth....
Y2K 7700, I will see what the dealer can provide me with when they yank my old motor out, maybe tell them that I want to see the parts before they destroy them, as they have to show you what they replaced and why they did, before they can get rid of it.....Might as well give that a try.

WLF,
I could care less if the lawyers make money from the class action lawsuit. The main reason why I started the suit is to make sure that people with the piston slap get new engines instead of the remanufactured(FQR)engines that usually develop the piston slap problem within a few hundred miles. That's why I'm fighting Ford!! I'm not looking for money. If the lawyers make money off the suit and I expect that they will, then good for them because, I'm really involved in the suit and I know that my attorney is working hard on it. We have alot of evidence that these FQR engines fail within a few months or within a few hundred miles of being installed in the trucks. So why should I accept a FQR engine when there is good chances of the engine failing. That's why I started the suit. So I hope that most common sensed people here would understand that I brought the suit to hopefully help them get a new engine or somehow be compensated for their problems with Ford Motor Company. Bugman.

So has anyone got problems with a 2000 ??
Am I the only one ?? My 2000 5.4 has a mfg date of 8/3/99.....it was one of the first ones. Rattles/knocks like worse than a diesel... definatly worse than the .wav file here on the site. Dealer says it is normal and all the 5.4's do that.
FWIW I've got 21K on it already with no other problems.

I am not sure of what type of replacement is ordered, but I will check with the dealer... from what they have been told from Ford is probably in response from this action or possibly that there is an abundunce of complaints. Anyway, I am very happy with the way its being handled, and I guess I will have to wait and see. I wil kep this informed of my outcome. Thanks for your efforts too, they have all been helpfull.
I just hit 480 miles on my 2000 5.4l F150 and I hear signs of piston slap at first start up already. At least it sounds like the .wav files I have heard, only at this point, they are very faint. After driving about 10 miles on the highway, when I was stopped, I slightly revved it again to see if the noise was there. It wasn't. This is the second time I have heard this noise.
When it makes the noise, if I rev a little higher, say to about 2k rpm, the noise stops, but then comes back as it idles down.
What tell-tale signs can I look for other than the noise as I described to confirm this is piston slap. I mean, com'on, it has less than 500 miles.
Assembly date on this truck was 3-1-00. That is a Wednesday btw, so no Monday or Friday build!

Farmboy- If your dealer says that noise is normal tell him I'm bringing my 2000 5.4 with 5000 miles in for him to fix then, because mine doesn't knock so there must be something wrong with it.

This piston slap thing is making people neurotics, f150 with an engine built 03-01-00
is already hearing things, it is summer and as per what I have heard you only hear this in very cold mornings and from people from northern states, mine is built 03-27-00 and myself with only one day old in my hands was under the engine trying to listen to a piston slap thats not there, I even paid a mechanic to check the engine, the forum is good for feedbacks but it is realy making people neurotics with this piston slap, even the 4.6 engine owners are hearing piston slap's, the new lightning owners are hearing piston slaps, I just stood in front of the mirror took a good breaht and said to myself enjoy your truck, if something shows up, well take it to the dealer, it's like the lottery, if your number plays it is your luck.

Yeah, you are right. The thing that makes me really paranoid is that I bought a 98 model F150 used a while back. Nothing but problems and it was right at the breaking 36k miles so Ford was less than helpful to resolve issues, especially since I was the second owner. At the time I blamed Ford and swore that they were all problem trucks. It really was my own fault for buying someone elses problem.
Well....I bought an even bigger problem, after 15 years of Ford loyalty, I traded my Ford for a 99 Silverado. I won't detail the problems here. I'll just say that I traded back to Ford for this 2000 F150. It is a beautiful truck and I love it! What you say about being paranoid is true. I am just really gun shy at this point. I have lost a LOT of money trading off twice now, within a year of ownership of each. I can't bare the thought of another truck with problems.
Dan.

You two summed it up pretty well.
Service from my '97 was enough to pursuade me to buy another -- and now what was a mild concern over getting a 'mere 70R4W' tranny has been replaced by the ever-growing fear of latent defects in the one major component responsible for my jumping from GMC to Ford in the first place.

Hello Bugman,
I don't know if I got this correctly. Will the piston slap only develop in northern states in cold temperatures? If I live in So. California, will my engine not be affected or I just won't be able to hear it but it will still blow up eventually. Please let me know if you have any info on this.
Thank you.

New5.4,
Since I started the lawsuit, the attorney that's handling the case and as well as myself, have been getting reports from all over the country with engines that have the piston slap. I originally thought that it would be just in the northern states but, we have been getting alot of reports in the southern states and in southern California. So, it's not just the colder states. My engine knocks at temperatures from 100 degrees and lower every time I start it and it lasts approximately two to five minutes. My next door neighbor thought that I had bought a diesel when I first bought it and that was in November. Needless to say that it was pretty embarassing since they are Dodge owners. Also, this goes for everyone interested in the lawsuit and are thinking about joining. I spoke to my attorney and he said that anyone who is interested in obtaining any information/documents about the lawsuit, to contact him and he will be glad to send you the information. Bugman.

I don't understand why he can send us the information but you can't post it. If I ask him for the info, how does he know that I don't work for Ford anyway? The information he has will get out, there is no way around it.

I was wondering if the piston slap problem has occurred from 97 to present? Are there specific months of manufacture or even a specific place the engine was manufactured that may be common among these problem motors.
I have a 97 that seemed to have a slight knock upon start up when it was new. I attributed this to the oil pump taking time to prime. I have 32k on my truck now and haven't heard the noise since the break in periods 1000 miles. I recently installed a supercharger and still haven't had any problems BUT am getting concerned because of all the posts, and a warranty 1 month from expiration. I'm sure if the problem occurred now they would blame it on the supercharger, even though they use the same one on the Lightning.

Bugman,
I'm too am confused. The atty won't allow you to post any info but he's willing to send it to any one who calls? What would prevent me from calling, getting the info and then posting it?

I had the pleasure of riding in my friend's 1999 5.3 Silverado again this noon. Had not yet closed my door when he started the engine.
Holy moly! Talk about lifter clatter! That thing must have clattered every adjuster for about 1-2 seconds.
When asked about the noise, he was totally un-shaken and resigned to the fact that it was not going to hurt anything.
Ouch! It was worse than the two or three sound-bytes that I've heard linked to this forum.
