I thought that the Oil Pressure Switch worked the idiot light directly. I'll have to check.

About the oil pressure... you have an after-market gauge setup installed? Because the gauge that is stock in the truck isn't really a gauge. When the Oil Pressure Switch closes, current is sent to the dash gauge (meter) to put it in a happy looking area. Doesn't track actual oil pressure at all. Just on-off with the contacts in the Oil Pressure Switch. If minimum pressure is met to close the switch, it closes, and thats that. Its not a oil pressure sender, just a pressure switch.

I just went out and started my truck to see. Cold start..and it was on for 2-3 seconds. I think you are just fine and that this is very normal. I have 1,020 miles so far.

Hey Hotshot!

Welcome. I have to agree with everyone else here. When I change my oil, the light comes on for 2 - 3 seconds until the pressure is built up enough to turn it off.

Yours sounds normal to me. By the way, if you can you should prefill your new filter with oil before installing it. I realize the 4 x 4s make it difficult to do this if they are mounted horizontally but my 4 x 2 has the filter right next to the drain plug and mounted vertically. No big deal however.

Dustoff, just noticed, did you get a new truck? Congrats

Question check oil light

Hi all im a new owner of a 97 F-150 4.6 with 30,000 mi. I just changed the oil using fords 820s filter and mobil 1 5-30w. Ok so here is the question when I start the engine my oil pressure gauge jumps up to around 65 psi but the iol indicator light stays on for 1-2 seconds. I called 8 dealerships speaking to the service managers they all said that the computer does a quick check and that its normal. It also states in my trucks manual that it illuminates breifly. Has anyone else noticed their light staying on after start up? if so how long ?

Thumbs up

Dunbarton..

Thanks and YES! "Free-O-Charge". Long story short...Paint problems. The dealership thinks it was "acid rain damage" on the cab roof from the factory (some on the hood). I am not 100% convinced though...paint defect I think. It was starting to really show at the 6 month point (4,000 miles)...and I was not very happy.

I sent digital pictures and the regional rep was contacted by them. I scheduled an appointment to have them look at it. I also sent FORD Motor Company a letter. I let the dealership look at the truck and they said it was pretty bad (there were at least 50 spots that were starting to show up) and that they had seen this before. It honestly looked like paint bubbles that had been 'fixed' in some way. The truck looked great on delivery roof and all...but it was starting to look terrible on top.

They first offered to repaint and I said not on a new $26,000+ truck..6 month old truck that I factory ordered. The Sales manager said he wouldn't want that either..and told my sales guy to order me a new one. And that they would see what FORD would do to help cover the cost. FORD's assistance ended up being $4,000..to the dealership...so everyone did OK.

There are a few dealerships that will do the right thing..sad thing is most will not. Be persistent and let them know what will satisfy you. Being a repeat buyer and sending a few friends their way helped for sure. I was lucky.
