Question Carbon buildup iinside TB & manifold

While installing a WMS velocity tube today. I notice there was alot of carbon buildup inside the throttle body and intake manifold. I took my finger and was able to wipe a small smudge off. The truck has 20K miles. Is this normal? I plan on getting some carb cleaner tomorrow to help clean some of the gunk out. Any recommendations on cleaning inside or carb cleaners??

with the EGR/emmissions of the engines, you get some exhaust gasses recirculated back thru the intake. This is what causes the black soot. There is really nothing that you can do to prevent it.

Cleaning it, the BEST cleaner for it is at Napa. get their house brand carb spray. It is in a light blue can with yellow letters. It just cuts that stuff off!! anything else you will be wasting your money.

Once you have cleaned it, wait about 1 hour before starting. It will be hard to start since you will have all the carb cleaner in the intake there.

Thumbs up

JUPITERAK dont use regular carb cleaner to clean it FORD puts a special anti sludge coating on these and the carb cleaner will remove the coating and will damage the throttle body bores! however if you go to NAPA AUTO PARTS they sell a special cleaner for cleaning the special coated throttle bodys that dont harm the coating it is made by 3M brand prodcts and its about $4.00 a can

I have heard that spraying cleaner into the TB is bad for sensors, etc. That it is better if you remove it to clean it.

I sprayed 1/4 of a can of the NAPA carb cleaner. Took for a 15 min. drive. This morning I did the same again. Now it's VERY clean. Thanks to all for the help.

Yes, you will definitely clean the throttle body. No doubt.

The goal is to remove the trash from the throttle body, without removing the coating. This is why there is a decal that says "Do not clean inside throttle body".

Ford makes a special throttle body cleaner which will do this job and lubricate the throttle valve. It is best to follow the instructions, no scrubbing. If you cannot find this stuff, use ONLY "BG" throttle body cleaner. These two cleaners work extremely well.

Bear in mind, you may never have any problems, but many times I have seen intermittent rough idle and stalling. Rolling idle is another common problem.

Just trying to help, I'm not flaming anyone here.
