Engine Noise!!! GRRRRR!!!

Ok, I've been trying to get this noise fixed since I bought my truck. I have taken it to 3 different dealers. None seem to be able to fix it. It sounds like some sort of exhaust leak or valve train tap under light acceleration. Has done it since new. Had FOrd put on new exhaust manifold gaskets, all new cat. converters, new resonators, and various EGR and emissions hoses. Anyone else have this problem? If so, what was it and how did you fix it?
It is a 2000 5.4L (build date of truck is 06/00)

Anyone?

My truck has had the exact same noise since day one..
The dealer says that is normal on some engines.. I test drove other's, and some had the same noise to a lesser extent..

The truck has 36k miles on it, and runs fine, good mpgs, and no problems..

If I were to guess, I think the problem is the goofy rams head looking Y-pipe in the exhaust. It is this same y-pipe design that is the cause of the 'flutter' found in V10 engines..

In my case I think the problem is exaggerated because I have the 5sp manual tranny instead of the automatic..

If in your travels, you actually get this resolved, let us know..

Thumbs down raspy sounding engine

Same here. I have a 99 4.2V6 auto that has a flutter when accelerating. Although the V6 is a louder engine than your V8's in general, I could still single out that particular sound when I'm accelerating. I changed my y pipe and put a cat back but still to no avail. Its not a head gasket leak, is it?

Red face that really sucks...

Hey Lariat4wd,

my truck has over 105k on her and the truck has been making these little noises that sound like exhaust leaks for all of the miles...I dont think I need to worry about it, with that many miles I still get about 18mpg with the mods and a light foot, but I have got 7mpg, poor truck....but if yours is that new and gets that poor of mileage then i would say there is a problem, who knows....I just live with the noises of mine, when the exhaust does'nt drown them out....lol

Hope that you find your problem...

Does the noise ya'll describe seem to be coming from the drivers side kinda from behind the dash (steering wheel) just on the engine side of the firewall. I have the same noise you describe and that's where it's coming from. Only does it on acceleration. Let off the gas and it goes away. Quiets down after I reach crusing speed. It's kinda a fast ticking kinda airy sound. Almost sounds like a valve or lifter tap but not quite. The dealer said their was some sort of solonoid right their behind the dash in the engine compartment, that can make a ticking noise. It seems more noticable in warmer weather. When it's cold out I really do not hear it much. I get about 16-18 mpg so I'm not losing mileage and I have good power. It's done this since new. I now have 7,000 miles. Cat back exhaust did not make any difference. I cannot hear it while sitting in the driveway under acceleration so its really hard to figure out.
(I haven't worked up the nerve to get someone to drive my truck around with the hood up while I stradle the air filter and try to locate the noise
)
Seriously though, I cannot figure this one out. Anybody got anymore ideas?

YES!!! That's it!!! Driving me INSANE!!!!!!! Please, can someone come up with a solution. I've had my dealers around here tell me it was my cat back exhaust, exhaust manifold gaskets leaking, bad catalytic (sp?) converters, even had one tell me it was my brush guard vibrating...HAHAHAHAHA....at least I'm not the only one that has this. I would love for it to go away though. It's annoying. Do the Lightnings do this too?

My '00 made the same noise from day 1. I drove that truck 34,000 miles without any motor related problems. The truck that I drive now is identical except that is an'01 and it has never made that noise.

Sounds like something I've read about here in the forums before.... noisy injectors perhaps?

Put it on a dyno and use one of those mechanic's stethoscopes to listen for noise in the components as you accelerate and generate that noise.
