JDF,

The engine in your Mark VIII is not the same engine in the F150. The Mark VIII uses a dual overhead cam version of the 4.6, while the trucks use a single overhead cam version that makes 50 less horsepower than the DOHC. The truck actually weighs about 1000 pounds more the the car, too. You can verify this on one of the buyer guide sites like carpoint or edmunds. Another thing that will pull down the mileage is the 4x4 system. The mechanicals in the front axle create some friction that will decrease mileage, too. Some other factors that will affect mileage are tire size and of course aerodynamics.

Don't take this stuff the wrong way. I just wanted to make sure you understand the differences between your car and your future truck.

Hope this clears a few things up,

Sven

I have had a terrible time with milage. The first 3,200 miles (prior to first oil change) I averaged 10.5 MPG.

The Truck now has over 4,000 miles and average since 0 miles is 11.22.

However, since the first oil change or the last approx 1,000 miles I have averaged 13.3 MPG

This is a combo of 70/30 city/highway driving. I believe it is improving due to break in and Mods. Still looking for more improvment.

JDF - Don't get the 4.6 I always wished I had the 5.4 in my 98 and I ended up spending twice as much because I traded it in for that reason (I now have a 2000 f150). I don't do any heavy towing ethier but after you drive a friends with the 5.4 you wont ever be satisfied! There is a difference. Just my opinoin though.

I appreciate all of the info guys. It really looks like I am not in the minority as far as milage is concerned.

Cool

JDF,

It would probably cost an arm and 2 legs, but it would be a nice ride

JDF your getting a 01 with the 4.6 since your Mark VIII had the same engine. Well I done the same thing as I had a 96 Mustang GT with the 4.6 put 75,000 miles on it with no engine problems so I went with the 4.6 in my truck. My stang got around 19 to 20 local driving with basicly the same engine as the truck has. But the truck doesn't get that kind of mileage as the old stang did.

I haven't kept up on 4x4 technology over the years, but in the old days, the FORDs with locking hubs got better mileage than the CHEVY's without the hubs. That free wheeling option sure made it easier on the engine not to be turning all that axle gear. My '88 4x4 has the locking hubs which realy is a true 4x4 and I don't find it that inconvenient. I know they use to sell kits to change your hubs. Just a thought.

1998 5.4 extended cab w/tow pkg. I bought it with 47k on it and was getting 15.5. I installed a Superchip and changed to Amsoil. I now get 17. I don't know what I get when pulling, it runs about 3k @ 70 without O/D so I'm afraid to check.
