Ford Disease

Ok I just picked up my first F150 and she is a real gem, 4X4 RC FS and I love it!! I have owned Fords all my life and the 5L has never left me on the side of the road no matter how hard I beat it (yes I drive all my cars like they’re stolen). Anyway every 5L I ever owned had what all of my friends and I call Ford Disease, the ability for all of the motor oil to mysteriously disappear without cause or warning. I had an 88 Mustang that I would check the oil on after each fill up and I can think of at least 8 times when the oil would go down about 2 litres over a 15 minute drive. Here is the weird part no smoke….no leaks…..no funny coloured coolant, it was just gone. Anyway my new truck has the 4.6L in it and I wanted to know if I can expect the same thing?? Has anybody ever heard of this before or am I more of a nut than I think I am?

Overly

Not all the oil, just about 2 litres or so. I just need to know what I can expect from the 4.6, I never owned one before

Thumbs up

No oil disappearing from my 4.6 It uses no oil!?! Everytime I check the oil, it's at the level it was filled to. I don't think you have anything to worry about.,,,,98

Oh, it has about 69,000 miles on it

Lightbulb

It does take almost 7 quarts to fill, though. 6 quarts puts the level a hair above minimum on the stick. That is with a new filter, however.,,,98

my 5.0 uses about 1 qt of oil around every 4000 miles but thats probably due to the fact that the engine has 195000 miles. im plannng to rebuild it (or maybe replace it) when it hits 200000. no other problems with it whatsoever!

I check my oil weekly, but it has never burned more than a half quart of oil over a 5,000 mile period. I'm at 75,000 miles, and have no leaks. There are many people on here with twice the milage I've got with no leaks as well. I guess Fords must be notorious in the past for burning oil, but I haven't found that to be the case on my F-150.

My Co. truck has a 4.6L (orginal untouched, except for tune-up @ 102,000 miles) with over 186,000 faithful miles on it now. Wow, what an engine, it will use about one quart every 5,000 miles.

The 1997 F-150 S/C , 2WD still runs excellent and still rides good too.
