Post 4.6l vs 4.8l

Obviously, the 4.6l has more torque, correct? But does this match up with the 4.8l's huge horsepower advantage?

I have driven both truck. The 4.6 Ford doesn't even come close to matching the hp/torque of the 4.8 Chevy.

------------------
97 4.6 F150, 1/8 = 10.885 @ 64.10 mph, 88 5.0 Mustang 1/8 = 7.191 @ 94.76 mph

The ford does beat the Chevy in torque. The ford has 295 at 3250 and the chevy is 290 at 4000. Somebody correct me if I am wrong. The 2001 4.6 is getting a 20 horsepower increase so that should help some. I don't know the torque curves for each motor, so the chevy may have 270 ft/lb at 1500 rpms or something, that would beat the ford.

As in "Fast46triton"? Is that you? I hadn't seen a post from Fast46 lately. Just curious.

I ran a stock '99 Chevy, all I know is I heard a V-8, but on the bottom end, he couldn't keep up before the blower. I even waited to hear him go to WOT, and never downshifted. He did start to catch up, but there was too much traffic to run it out.

To be honest, it sounded like an old TBI 5.7l...lol

I hear they are hotter than the 4.6 though.

1/8 10.33 (before the blower) loose through 1st.

Hey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I Know you guys know better but you aren't thinking. Speed means nothing in truck engines. The 4.6 or 4.8???? well.............the 4.6 develops 90% of is torque below 2,000 rpm. the 4.8 doesn't. If you take both engines with LIKE axel ratios, the same load, the same hill the Ford motor would have to works LESS hard than the Chevy. I noticed the Chevys 4.8 peak torque (less than the Fords) is at a very, very high 4,000 rpm. Remember Ford peak is at 3,250. Thats a bunch less. If you think the Ford engine has to rev to get power you would have to rev the sh*t out of the 4.8 to get any real power. Any body disagree?????????

Thumbs up

Hope to have some 1/4 mile answers to this by the end of Sep. My brother has a 2000 Silverado with 4.8L. My brother-in-law has a 2000 Silverado with 5.3L. Another brother-in-law has a '97 Dakota with 318. We are all stock. I've just about got them talked into it. My only advantage is I've ran at the track before and I ain't telling these bums nothin'.

Yes, I am back crash1!

Ford has thr torque down on the 4.6l, now they need some horsepower to go with it.

Raoul,

Something is wrong. Ive never seen you so serious

A bunch of us went to the track last month with Mike Troyer. It lit a fire in my belly.
I can't even drive my truck without my racing gloves now.

mlaugh i really dont know about the 4.6 and the 4.8. i know on paper the torque thing make sense, but a new 5.3 chevy in a race with a 5.4 ford the chevy wins. i have seen it in magazines and first hand. so when you take off from dead stop and at the end of the race the chevy is ahead how do you explain that, it take more power to move one 5000 lb vehicle faster than another. are you saying if we put a 1000 lbs in the back of both it would be a closer race?
chevrolet has gone to these (higher h.p. over torque) engines in trucks and cars.
I know when building a street/race car this is a big debate, torque or h.p. seem that with the newer performance cars (camaros, mustang cobras) the h.p. is winning

BrotherDave. Torque is the measure of twisting power or the available power to get a load moving form a dead stop. Think about it why do Diesels have high torque and low HP? Hp is the ability to move it once it gets going. NOW if you cant get the load moving (torque) how can you move it fast? For a truck engine the lower (rpm) and higher the torque (Lbs ft.) the better. OK?

MLAUGH, I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. COMPARING TO A DIESEL IS NOT FAIR BECAUSE A DIESEL BY NATURE IS A LOWER R.P.M. MOTOR. I THINK THE BIG TRUCKS USE THEM FOR A COMBINATION OF THE TORQUE AND THE FUEL ECONOMY AND THE LONGER SERVICE LIFE. THERE IS A LOT MORE TO IT THAN JUST PEAK TORQUE (GEARS, TRANMISSION RATIOS, WEIGHT AND HOW FLAT THE TORQUE CURB IS) DONT FORGET THE RPM AT WHICH IT SHIFTS. I KNOW IS THE CHEVY IS QUICKER. MAYBE IF IT WAS REALLY LOADED DOWN WE WOULD SEE THE DIFFERENCE.

Do you guys believe the torque/hp figures that Ford has published for our 4.6 engines? They were way high for the Cobra. They are probably high for our trucks. The 4.8 Chevy I drove felt like it had more power than my 4.6 97 all the way throught the power band. I wouldn't believe any figures Ford publishes. These LS1 engines are killer!
