Post Anyone us a scan tool

after about 50k the engine light stays on but truck runs fine. No drop in fuel mileage and everything looks good. Is this just an emissions money maker or does a legit problem exist?? I don't want to dish out the cash for the scan tool but there seems no other way to read the codes on the OBDII system. anyone have any ideas??

I bought a OBD-II Tester from Autozone made by Actron Model CP9035F for $150. The only Auto Store in my area that had one. Mine did identify a bad O2 sensor that I replaced with a Bosch sensor for $50. I noticed that the orig sensor was a Bosch. I've read that removing the fuel cap with the ignition on may trigger a light. There are many testers out there you can order I wanted mine "right now" and it is easy to use and I'm happy with it.

Many scanners?!! Not for OBDII. The garages use the high dollar Snap On scanners, several thousand dollars. An individual only has two choices: Autotap software at $250 and the Actron unit for $150. Autozone is the biggest Actron retailer, thus your best source for obtaining one. They get them Federal Expressed; other retailers have to actually order them and usually wait a week or so (that word from Actron). There are a whole host of items that can set codes in an OBDII system with a loose gas cap setting an evaporative system leak. At $60 to $70 a shot for a dealership to hook up your vehicle to their Snappy scanner, not to mention the time spent waiting around, it doesn't take long for the Actron unit to pay for itself.

Thumbs up

Thanks you just talked me into one. Too bad it wasn't like the old days of reading the code with the engine light or using the analog voltmeter. It will definitely pay off since it will read other OBDII systems.
