Angry Hole in my gas tank

5.4 - F150 - 4x4 - SuperCab - 3.55 - 2000
I,m getting 12 mpg mixed & 13.5 Highway
I've got 4k miles
The dealership is telling me the computer has a breakin period and will change the performance and milage once it hits a certain point. Is this true or am I being feed a bunch of s_ _t. I know that 12mpg is not good wether I'm driving hard or not.
Thanks for your help!!!

I think most of us have the same hole in the tank.
On the serious side my millage started to improve at about 5000 miles. I have the 4.6 when I first got it I got about 14mpg, I now am getting 17 mpg these are highway figures.
So if yours is anything like mine you should start improving soon, maybee to about 15-16 mpg.
Since I put the K&N fipk I got about a extra mpg, so I can get 18 mpg if I am carefull.

I was getting around 1...1mpg when I first got the truck. It was the worst, went on a trip 45 miles away and had to fill up on the way back. After about 5000 miles it got better. I now have 53000 and get about 15 in the city and 17 to 18 on the highway.

I have found that with the factory program that if you run anything other than 87 octange the gas mileage goes to crap (I run Texaco). I have a 2000 and right now I am getting 13-14 in town but that I believe is because of the heat. This past spring I was getting around 14 - 15 MPG in town and have drove my truck to Alabama this past winter and got 18 - 20 MPG on the highway. The truck is fairly new it just rolled over 10K and I got it in January. I don't know if this info will help you and your truck but I had a 97 with 4.2L and my 2000 and they both did about the same thing.
