Engine ticking
I have a 2000 F150 5.4L,AT,4x4 I just bought last month. I am noticing a ticking noise in the engine compartment on the battery side. It doesn't get louder or slower/faster. Sometimes I don't hear it at all and sometimes it drives me nuts. Does anybody have any idea what this may be? I know I can take it back to the dealer I just don't have the time right now. Any suggestions would be great.
Its probably "pinging", I have it to. Try putting in higher octane gas. It has helped me. You could also try cleaning your maf. http://www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/web/pages/ping.html

When do you hear it?
While driving?
Parked w/ engine running?
Can you hear it outside of the car, or only while on the inside?
If the noise doesn't change frequency with engine speed, than it's probably not pinging.
What kind of ticking is it?
Does it sound like electricity arcing?
Does it sound like your turn signal?
Like water dripping on a hot pan?
Like the clicking after the car is turned off after a ride?
Need more input. (read like johnny5 in Short Circuit).
