Ok...Today I was looking trying to find Accel Coil packs and a Jacobs DIS for my 1999 5.4L...

I called Tech support for Accel and was told that they did not make a model specific Coil Pack for the 5.4, just for the 4.6...I asked if the Pack for the 4.6 (part# 140018) would work with the 5.4...And they did not know because they have not tested it for that application yet, but that is is possible...Then I was told that they make a universal Coil Pack (part# 140009) that would work...But that it might not plug right in as is...He said the connectors might have to be replaced by the ones on the engine now...Which sounds like cutting and splicing to me...

Has anyone sucessfully used either #140018 or 140009 on a 5.4L? If the later, what was involved in making it work?


Next...I also did a search on this board for info on the Jacobs DIS...But I failed to find anyone who had used one on a 5.4..And a few post saying that Jacobs does not make one for the 5.4...Is this true or do they make one? I haven't contacted Jacobs yet, but will tomorrow...

Your '99 5.4 engine does not use coil packs like the 4.6. The 4.6 (unless its been updated) has two coil packs, each of which fires four different plugs through traditional resistor plug wires. The 5.4 uses the coil-on-plug setup with each of the eight plugs having its own small coil attached to it; there are no resistor-type plug wires associated with this setup. The firing order is the same on both engines, however.

I'm not sure if an aftermarket company has marketed a performance coil for the 5.4 yet.

Don't use anything not specifically made for your truck engine. I have a Jacobs ignition but this fires coil packs on my 4.6. The 5.4 has individual coils as you have already been told. It's going to be hard to beat the orriginal Ford setup so, until someone comes out with tested proof, stick to the orriginal.
