Question Curious about 5.4 engine in F150 x-cab

I am probable getting a 2000 F150 4x4 space cab with the 5.4 engine. How much horse power does this engine have. How many MPG's should I get and is this a reliable engine? I heard the F150's equipped with the 5.4 engine come with a larger rear axle. Is this true?

260 HP and 345 pounds of torque.

Nope, same axle unless you go with the F150 7700 model.

About 15-16 average MPG's. Maybe 18-19 unloaded on a trip and 10 to 12 towing depending on the size of the load and your rear end ratio.

Yes the 5.4 does come with a larger axle.

All 5.4s have the 9.75 in.
All 4.6 and 4.2s have the 8.8 in.

If you get 4x4 the front end has an 8.8 in. diff.

Ford-Tough is right, the 5.4L does come with the larger axle.

You can see my truck description below. Before I made the engine modifications I was averaging about 12.5 between city/highway (that's with my toolbox).

I can't comment on the reliability of the engine, I've only got 15,000 miles on it. I've never had any problems with it.

If you're going to get the extended cab I would go with the 5.4L. When I was test driving the 4.6L in the extended cab seemed sluggish. Just my $.02

I get the same mileage as well. I only get about 1mpg more by driving like a granny. Once the transmission adjusts to me driving like a granny, I miss the oomph, so I stop driving like a granny. ciest la vie.

Just drove home my new 2000 F150 5.4 4x4 extra cab. Love the power. Haven't had a V8 in years. I got it for $24,700 with 10k on the odometer. Will start adding on to it soon. First a k&n filter. Thanks for your comments.

The 5.4L in the F150 is a great choice..
I have the 5.4L in my F250 SuperDuty and it does just fine, and it weighs a good 1K more than the F150.
I'm getting slightly better MPG than most folks but thats likely because I have the 5sp rather than the auto tranny.
15.5mpg mixed driving, 17+ if mostly highway.

Talking

I'll have an orgasm the first time I calculate 15.5 in combined city/rural driving.

I am getting that consistently with my F250SD SC. 15.9 was my best mixed driving. Same as R. Bess. I have 3.73 rear end. My F250 XLT SC 4X2 weighs 200 pounds more than my F150 Lariat SC 4X4 with 4.6L did. Both were/are automatics too.
