Post 302 to 351w Swap

I've got a 1990 F150 4X4 with the stock 302 still in it. Anyone that has the 302 in a 4X probably knows that it is terribly underpowered. Has anyone out there successfully accomplished a stock 302 to a 351w engine swap? I would interested to know how clean the swap is. Are there any big "gotchas"? Any help would be appreciated. TIA

Hey. I've got one lined up for my truck with a blown 351 stroker. In addition to the crate 351, you're gonna need a new computer, as well as headers. Otherwise the swap goes pretty flawlessly. The 302 and 351 are VERY similar. Shouldn't be a problem.

You'll need another computer, or a switch to a Mass air computer. You didn't state what tranny, if you have the E40d(was new for F-150's that year), you'll need a speed Density computer from a 1990-1995 speed-Density EFI computer. My advise is look for a wrecked harness. I also have heard were the exhuast pipes won't bolt up right, might just be a myth.

I have the 5.0L in my 1989 F-150 4x4 with a AOD and 3.55 gears. It's not underpowered by any means. Of course it's not stock either...

I thought about a 351, to replace my 302 in my 89, I might just build up this 302 and replace the EFI with a carb/intake so I can run a bigger cam. I want to keep my 16mpg, I doubt a 351 can accomplish that...

Yes. I should mention that the underpowered statement was refering to my stock motor.

Thanks for the replies. I probably should apologize in advance for being a Ford novice. I have had my truck for 6 years, and until now, have never thought of it as more than a ride to work. I have some rebuilding experience, but none on anything larger than a Honda Accord (about ten years ago).

Having said that... Is there somewhere out there that I can look up engine and tranny codes to find out exactly what I've got here?

My ride isn't broke, so I'm able to build one the way I want it. I hope to not wear out my welcome here, but I'm probably going to need a good deal of advice throughout the project. So, thanks in advance.

Hi 90F150
I had a 90 till 95. Changed engine & if anything, it got worse. If you make this move you'll have to change the electronics or do away with it. By the way, next was a 95 302 & it ran pretty good. It had MAF.

302 to 351w problems

I just did a swap in my 90 f150. Took the tired 302 out and put a 351w in out of a 88 f250 that had a c6. My problem is that it took out the torque convertor and the front pump. I took the truck to a local ford dealer ship 4weeks ago and here is what the did. Put in a new front pump and convertor and once again they wnet out in a mtter of minutes. Took the tranny out and rebuilt it and it did it again once again the removed it and said that the flywheel was wrong, I used the flywheel that came with the engine, so they put a 302 flywheel in it and the tranny work great but now theres a vibration and they said I either need to swap engines or replace the tranny. Has anyone had this kind of trouble doing this swap? Forgot to mention my tranny is a AOD.

they took off the 28OZ flywheel and put on the 50OZ flywheel thats why it vibrates. This will destroy your engine. You need to find out why the torque keeps going bad.
