How do I trigger the odometer display?

I read that you can trigger the odometer readout to display various functions about the vehicle. I tried turning it off, and then starting it up while holding down the trip reset button, but that didn't work. Does anyone know how to do this and what information is given out.

Did you hold the reset button in until all the gauge needles pegged? This usually takes a few seconds after you start the engine. The digital readout will also say "test gauge" or "gauge test", can't remember which. It's been a while since I've used that function.
