Synthetic Drain Intervals
Yet another Synthetic questions.
I know for conventional motor oil the drain interval is 3 months or 3,000 miles. What about synthetics time drain interval, my F-150 is not a daily driver and I don't accumulate anywhere near 3,000 miles in a three-month period. How long can I leave it in without changing it before it starts to break down and lose its protection properties?
Thanks.

BigRed2,
There are a couple of guidelines to follow for this one:
First, do a search on 'synthetic' and read all that you find. This will help you a lot.
Amsoil and Lubrication Engineers are the only companies that I know of that offer an 'extended-drain' motor oil. That means that the oil itself is warrantied to go beyond the standard oil-change interval safely.
Every other brand you should change according to your manufacturers recommended oil change intervals.
Lets take Amsoil's Series 2000 for instance: Comes with a 1 year/35,000 mile warranty. So you could change it only 1 time per year if you wanted. You could also change it every month, two months, six months as well. Whatever you wanted. Its a bit expensive to change every month, but some people do this.
Mobil 1 should be changed whenever you owners manual says it should be changed. No matter which system you set up your truck will benefit from it. As you've heard the benefits will be astounding and you'll be happy to change the oil now, knowing how much more protection it is getting.

You could probably change the Mobil 1 every 6 months and still be okay.
Same with Amsoil's xl7500. If you want a longer drain go for either the LE oil or Amsoil's other stuff (asl)5w30 and just change the filter at 6 months then change both the oil and filter once a year.
I dont' know what the proper LE oil is you could email oil man and ask him.
The series2000 stuff is kinda expensive for the amount of driving you do. I would stick with the original 5w30 with a (25,000 mile or 1 year drain) Or else Mobil 1 with a 7500 mile drain.

LE has two oils for the F150. It depends on the individuals preference. Both are petro/synthetic blends. One is 5w-30 and one is 10w-30.
LE does not have a Mercon V oil and I would recommend the Amsoil product for that.
LE does have a 75w-140 synthetic that works great in the rear ends and costs less than the dealer oil and has much less wear.
Sincerely, Kevin
