Isn't that the symptom some of these folks here are having caused by piston slap? Do a search "piston slap" and read some of those threads.

I'm aware of the problems with piston slap and this particular noise is not that. Piston slap will stay untill the piston gets hot and expands, about a minute or so. This is a sharp rattle and only lasts for a second or so. It is also too rapid for a piston noise. Does anyone know if these overhead cam 4.6s have hydraulic cam change tighteners?

Are you using 5W-30 oil? Motorcraft filters (or equiv. with anti drainback valve)? If not, you might not have enough oil up at the top of the engine when you start it up.

Hey voyageur,
You say the rattle only lasts for a second or so at start up. What kind of oil a filter are you using? Sounds like all you need to do is install a good quality oil filter with the anti drain back valve. I use Mobil 1 5W 30 and Motorcraft filter.
Good luck!!

Mike F,
You say your rattle lasts for a minute or so and you have the 98 5.4 . I'm with Boss one this one . You may have the "Piston Slap" problem. I've never heard it for myself but it is described as sounding like a deisel until the engine warms up. As Boss suggested, do a search on "piston slap" here in the engine forum and you will find all the info you need. There are members here that have over 100K miles on "Piston Slap" engines.

Good Luck !!

I had the same problem. Sounds like a deisel for the first min. Ford said piston slap and they replaced the motor. Nice and silent now.

Mine does this every once in a while when I let it sit for a week without cranking it. For only a split second. I think it is just from oil getting past the anti drain valve.

See the topic I started on "Valve Rattle." I have a 4.6L in a 99 Lariat. Mine does it at startup and going down the road. I have been told that it could be the EGR valve sticking. Again, it could be piston slap. Have someone start the engine while you stand in front of the vehicle with the hood up and see if you can determine if it is top end or bottom end.

Cool

Hey Ford Tough - Thanks I thought I was going bonkers. Sounds like we have the same noise. Changed my filter this morning to a ford filter - What are you using? I'll post the results of my experiment later.

E mac. It's always good to see others thinking the same. Gives some credibility to previous posters.
