Question Performance

My truck takes about 12 seconds to hit 60 from a standing start. Seems slow. What do yous get. Am I spoiled? Engine seems to ping quite badly on 87 and also soom on 91. Engine timing? I recently bought the truck and think it should have better power.

Farmtruck,

Yeah, I'd have that checked out. I'm not sure how long it takes my truck to get to 60 but I don't think it's that long.

Also, mine runs much better on 87 than the higher octane gas. Good Luck

according to figures from trucktrend.com ...

A 2000 F-150 SuperCab (5.4L + 3.55LS + 245-70 tires + 4spd auto) does 0-60 in 8.4 seconds at a tested weight of 5020 lbs. With an 800 lb payload, the time increases to 9.5 seconds.

Your F-250 weighs in at ??? Maybe 7000 lbs. That would put your 0-60 time in the 11s - 12s. You say about 12 seconds. That could be 11.5 actual, which would be my estimate.

Now you have a lower gear ratio, but Im sure that will be canceled out by taller tires. You 98 5.4 may also have a few less ponies than an y2k motor - canceled out by the K&N.

If I get a chance, Ill go back to trucktrend and check out the excursion time.

The truck weighs in at 5200 pounds. Reg cab/long box. It has 245/75R16s on it which are the original tires. Do you think it could be the engine timing? Last tank I ran premium and it helped some but it still pinged. No better power either. This tank is 87 again and I'll likely take it to a dealer unless somebody has another suggestion. Thanks.

Hi Farmtruck,

You might want to check that weight figure again, as every 4X4 F-250 we've seen, even the light-duty trucks, are going to weigh well over 5000 lbs. and more like 6000-6500 or so, you might want to get it on some good scales. Curb weight figures do not include fluids & driver, which is going to add a good 500-700 more lbs. easily. Just a thought!

Also, you should *not* experience any detonation using 87 octane regular gas with the factory programming. Since you say you are getting detonation even on 91 octane, something is definately not right, and you should get it in to the dealer to check it out. You may have a mass airflow sensor that is out of whack, etc.

There is so much potential weight difference in these trucks that the exact configuration can make the difference between a 5.4 F-150 that will go 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, to a F-250 5.4 that will only do this in 11-12 seconds.

Your 1998 F-250 5.4 puts out 235 hp stock, just to give you an idea.

Best of luck with your truck,

Question

Farmtruck,

How do you know when you are gettig to 60 MPH, hopefully not with truck's speedometer. Mine lags way behind the actual speed. I've watched it sometimes while shifting...clutch in and upshifting it's still increasing. There is no way truck can be accelerating while the clutch is disengaged! Maybe they do things to smooth out the speedo and that causes a lag?

Thanks Mike and everyone else.

I hauled some scrap steel to a junkyard and their scale showed 5200 lbs. Could easily be lacking some, or a lot, in accuracy! I'll get the truck checked out. Thanks again!

Get the mass air sensor cleaned and I bet the ping will stop. It sure helped mine. Also using a K&N filter........be carfull not to over oil it 'cause that will cause the maf to get dirty and the the pinging starts again. True story>I know from experience.

I am getting 0-60 in 12s. Is there anyone with a similar truck that can post their 0-60 time. I use a stopwatch and speedometer. Maybe not accurate but should compare to anyone elses.
