Post hesitations, pooch

My truck has started hesitating and is a real pooch on the interstate. It seems to have to down shift too often in order to keep speed up hills. Even slight hills. Could this be because of my open filter in the engine bay pulling in too much hot air. It has been real hot lately. I cleaned my MAF and temp sensor then I reset the computer today. Waiting to see a difference. Anyone else with this problem. If it is because of hot air, any suggestions on how to get cooler air in there. When I open the hood after driving it doesn't seem to be any hotter under the hood than outside.

Question

Cooler air produces more HP. That's why the factory unit draws cold air. That's why I did the 3" PVC mod instead of a FIPK. Most high volume intake and exhaust mods are fully utilized at high-flow heavy throttle, not normal driving; but air temp is.
