Miss under load
I am having trouble diagnosing this.
When I lug the engine at all I get a miss. If the AC is on and I run in 3rd, vs 2nd it stumbles.
If I run it through the gears and get on it it runs fine. I replaced plugs, cap, rotor,. and used fuel cleaners, etc. but it still runs bad. It started around 50k but has not gotten any worse at 60k.
My next choice is to go to the Ford dealer, but that is expensive.

Is this a clattering sound like detonation or a true miss/sputter?
If you have a Mass air system, the sensor may just be dirty. Without more info it is hard to say. A lean mixture knock/pinging is prevalent especially when outside air is hot.

You might want to tell us what type of motor you have. I'm guessing you have an automatic tranny. Do you have a newer triton engine, or do you have the old 300,302, or 351. When you mean that is misses, Does the engine have a hic-up, or does is start to buck?
Dear mre1627: Your description and list of pertinent details of what's ailing your steed is why the local Ford Service Writer bit my face off when I last stopped in.
Since it's up to our/my imagination , I'm going to say that your engine:
Has individual spark plug wires.
Ok -- that basis established, the problem is simple -- you have a breakdown in the High Voltage part of the ignition system (Gas/Fuel/Air -- the Big-Three).
Since it runs excellent at all other times (it must, else you would have told us otherwise) -- it means that when the engine requires it's most from the spark -- there isn't enough to spare (Fuel is the second choice -- but what are the chances that you've been riding around right at that starvation-point?!?).
So:
Since it is not one of those 100K mile before tuneup engines (you surely would not have led us astray with that important piece of information -- I had to infer it from the clues dropped: cap/rotor) -- you are probably at or past your scheduled (under "severe" conditions) mileage for replacing Wires.
So:
Change your wires (they may look nice, but HV eats the guts out of them).
My dear mre1627 -- There are some really good mechanics that fly past this board -- and you'd be much happier with productive suggestions if you'd read over your post/question for technical and probative content (like: Where's the Beef!?) so that those who care to can actually try to help.
