Question Cleaning MAF Sensor

I've seen on this board that a dirty MAF sensor may be one of the contributing factors to the pinging in the 4.6's. I've seen the suggestion that one should carefully clean the filament with a q-tip and a bit of windex. My question is whether or not there are any risks to this procedure and whether or not there are any alternative methods. Thanks.

I was told by a mechanic that the MAF sensor is self cleaning. He told me that the filament heats up for a very brief period of time after the engine is shut off to clean itself. Take it for what you will.

Roden.......It was me that made that post. My Ford mechanic took the left half of the air box out of the mount and used a special tool to remove the MAF from the housing, then sprayed it with carb cleaner. Then a little air to dry it....reinstall and you are done.

scroll down this page to learn how. It is from a 4.0L but it is all the same for Ford engines.
